A Mississauga man has been charged with assault after a demonstrator was attacked from behind and punched several times in the head at a downtown Toronto event this past weekend, police say.<\/p>\n

Detectives with the Toronto Police hate crime squad said they arrested a suspect on Monday after a man turned himself in to police officers at 52 Division.<\/p>\n

Police said the incident unfolded shortly before 5 p.m. last Saturday during a demonstration in the\u00a0Yonge Street and Grosvenor Street area of downtown Toronto.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe victim was walking northbound on Yonge Street, near Grosvenor Street, and was engaged in a conversation with another demonstrator\u201d when they were approached from behind by a man and punched \u201cseveral times in the head without provocation,\u201d police said in a news release on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The victim fell to the ground as a result of the attack, police added. They sustained injuries to their face and leg.<\/p>\n

Investigators said a suspect surrendered to police at 52 Division in Toronto on Monday.<\/p>\n

A 20-year-old Mississauga man has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the weekend attack. He was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with relevant information is asked to call Toronto Police at 416-808-3505 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).<\/p>\n

Prior to the arrest, police had appealed to members of the public for help in tracking down the person responsible for the Oct. 10 assault. They had released both a description and photo of a suspect.<\/p>\n
