Robots can take pictures. They do that all the time. We have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/astronomers-complete-largest-map-of-space-yes-you-can-play-with-it\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lots of pictures<\/a> in the area. We also have, on the International Space Station, a way for us to ask, \u201cPlease take a picture of this. Please take a picture of that.\u201d That\u2019s not what we did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nasa-just-made-nearly-1-tb-of-artemis-ii-data-available-to-the-public\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with Artemis II<\/a>, and that\u2019s not what we\u2019re trying to do with Artemis III or Artemis IV, V, VI. With the Artemis missions, we\u2019re trying to use the humans to their best capability, and what the humans are really good at is seeing a wide scene, zooming in on details very naturally, and then trying to interpret what they\u2019re seeing and take the next step.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">We don\u2019t know everything about the moon. To learn more, we need to literally go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nasas-curiosity-rover-got-its-drill-stuck-on-a-rock-heres-how-they-freed-it\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the surface<\/a> and figure out what\u2019s there and where to go next. So some of this is trying to train\u2014not just the crew onboard\u2014but the flight directors and the science team and the engineers. We all need to work together to enable humans to do what they do best.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">We also give the crew science prompts. We say, \u201cWhat do you think is happening in this scene? There\u2019s something like a storm or an algal bloom or a fire. What do you see? How do you see the scene changing? What do you think that means? What do you think is causing that change? What do you think is going to happen next? If you could do anything, what would you do next?\u201d That helps us understand what they\u2019re looking at, which is not just taking pictures. It\u2019s making observations, making understanding, making inferences with their brains. That\u2019s what humans are really good at.
