U.S. President Donald Trump told a crowd of supporters that Canada will \u201cend up being the 51st state\u201d as he listed a series of longstanding grievances the United States has with its northern neighbour. <\/p>\n
\u201cCanada treats us very badly. They always have. Not anymore. It\u2019s a whole different ball game now that Trump is in town,\u201d he said during a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Ariz., on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Trump brought up Canadian tariffs on milk, car companies moving their factories to the U.S. and renaming Lake Ontario to \u201cLake America.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the U.S. president, Canada \u201cripped off\u201d the U.S. through tariffs on \u201canything past two bottles (of milk).\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019ll end up being the 51st state, because that\u2019s the only way it works,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe don\u2019t need them, but they need us.\u201d<\/p>\n
The U.S. president then asked why the U.S. should be losing billions of dollars \u201cto support a country that isn\u2019t one of us?\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump made the comments on the same day Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, suggested the actions of several Canadian politicians could amount to \u201cpolitical interference\u201d<\/a> in close races ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November. <\/p>\n Hoekstra pointed to comments made by Industry Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly, who said in August that Canada\u2019s retaliatory tariffs are designed to target specific U.S. states<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cIt appears that some of this, from our perspective, in the way we view our elections, could be inferred to be election interference,\u201d the ambassador said in an interview on \u201cThe Really Big Show\u201d podcast. <\/p>\n One of those close races is in Michigan, where Democrats have tied Trump\u2019s tariff policies to the higher cost of living facing Americans.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Trump has commented on the elections of several countries throughout his second term in office. Last weekend, he said it was time for Ukraine to get a new president<\/a>, suggesting Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not done enough to end the war with Russia and blaming him for high diesel prices in the United States. <\/p>\n The president also advocated for Flavio Bolsonaro in Brazil\u2019s elections<\/a> earlier this month, and endorsed former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban<\/a> ahead of his election loss in April. <\/p>\n Canada \u2018blew up\u2019 trade deal with U.S. to gain political leverage: Lutnick Speaking on CNBC, U.S. Commerce Sec. Premier David Eby announced<\/a> that the province will install new signs at the U.S. border crossings declaring the province \u201cnever the 51st state.\u201d<\/p>\n U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick targeted Ontario in \u201c51st state\u201d remarks last month, saying the province would be the \u201clast out of our 51st states.\u201d The comment was a response to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who called on the Trump administration to \u201cstart being serious\u201d about trade negotiations. <\/p>\n In June, after Canada slipped into a technical recession, Trump revived his call to the country to become the \u201c51st state\u201d on social media, drawing sharp criticism from officials from across Canada.<\/p>\n
