Janet Mills has proclaimed Thursday as the second-ever \u201cMaine Day of Soccer\u201d in celebration of the new women\u2019s franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe Hearts of Pine have brought a tremendous amount of pride and energy to Maine during their first two seasons, and I can\u2019t wait to welcome their new women\u2019s team to Portland,\u201d Mills said in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The first \u201cMaine Day of Soccer\u201d came in April 2024 when the men\u2019s Hearts of Pine team launched its name, crest and brand identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to Gabe Hoffman-Johnson, founder and chief community officer for the Hearts of Pine, the addition of the women\u2019s team has been a vision since the beginning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThis is a moment we\u2019ve imagined for a long time, and to see it become real with so much support from people across the state is incredibly meaningful,\u201d said Hoffman-Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WABI.
