Students preparing to enter high school have an opportunity to pursue specialized academic programs in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon, with information nights starting later this month and applications opening in November.

The Peel District School Board (PDSB) offers Regional Learning Choice Programs (RLCPs) at 17 secondary schools, giving students the chance to explore specific interests and academic pathways beyond the regular classroom experience.

The programs cover a range of subjects, from science and technology to international business, the arts and skilled trades. Some focus on advanced academic study and university preparation, while others offer opportunities to develop creative abilities or practical technical skills.

Unlike regular high school classes, which follow the Ontario curriculum across a broad range of subjects, these specialized programs build a particular area of interest into students’ learning experience.

For example, students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs can focus on those fields, while International Business and Technology (IBT) students combine business concepts with technology. Students in regional arts programs can pursue creative interests, while the Regional Skilled Trades program provides a more hands-on learning pathway.

The board also offers Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, which provide academically challenging pathways designed to prepare students for post-secondary education.

The programs are not intended to commit students to a single career at an early age. Instead, they give students opportunities to develop skills and explore subjects that may help guide their future education and career choices.

Families interested in the programs can attend information nights hosted by participating secondary schools beginning Oct. 21.

Applications for the 2027-2028 school year open Nov. 3 and close Nov. 24. Admission is competitive because each program has a limited number of spaces.

The application process includes a review of students’ academic records, including their Grade 7 final report card and Grade 8 progress report. Some programs may also require auditions or written responses. Eligible applicants are then entered into a random selection lottery.

Students already enrolled in an elementary Regional Learning Choice Program are not automatically guaranteed a place in a secondary program and must generally apply again when entering Grade 9.

The programs require an application fee and an annual program fee, although financial assistance may be available through school principals.

The board says the specialized pathways are intended to give students more choice in how they learn, allowing them to pursue academic challenges or subjects that match their interests.

Families can find information about participating schools, individual programs and upcoming information nights on the Peel District School Board website.

Applications and program details are available through the board’s Regional Learning Choices Programs information page.
