Red Bull Racing\u2019s technical director, Pierre Wach\u00e9, sees first-hand what the four-time Formula 1 world champion is capable of. Speaking to our colleagues at racingnews365, the Frenchman explains what sets Verstappen apart from his rivals.<\/p>\n
Wach\u00e9 explains: \u201cI reckon the main advantage Max Verstappen brings to the table is this incredible feel he develops for his car. I won\u2019t call him an engineer, because he isn\u2019t one, but he gives his team something that no other driver I\u2019ve seen can provide \u2013 in terms of feedback and pinpointing exactly what\u2019s needed to make his car faster.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s incredible how well he can sense his racing car, what\u2019s missing when he\u2019s driving it, and then translate all of that into a language we can understand.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the first lap of practice, he already knows exactly where the car stands and what its limits are. In my view, that makes him the best driver the sport has ever had. The feel for the car is one thing, but then being able to articulate exactly what he needs to perform even better \u2013 that combination is unrivalled.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wach\u00e9 continues: \u201cWhen we win, he\u2019s a dream to work with. When we lose, he\u2019s a nightmare. No, I\u2019m just joking, of course. All of us on the team love him because we know full well that he gives his all in the car. He\u2019s also an exemplary team player \u2013 another reason why he\u2019s so popular.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cVerstappen respects the work of everyone in the team, and he only expresses his opinion on what\u2019s important to him when it comes to handling the race car. He respects people\u2019s expertise, and he\u2019s quite open to ideas from those around him.
