Fourth Wing has spent the last three years turning dragons, deadly military training and an enemies-to-lovers romance into one of the biggest publishing phenomena in recent memory. Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling fantasy series has built an enormous following, with readers becoming particularly invested in the relationship between Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson. Naturally, that meant whoever Prime Video chose to play them would have some fairly enormous expectations to live up to. Thankfully, the wait to find out who’ll be climbing onto those dragons is finally over.

According to the trades, Prime Video has reportedly found its two leads for the upcoming Fourth Wing television adaptation, with Esther McGregor (We Were Liars) cast as Violet Sorrengail and Emilio Sakraya (Those About to Die) taking on the role of Xaden Riorson, according to Deadline. The story follows twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general — who just so happens to be her mother — has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

What’s ‘Fourth Wing’ About?

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter, including Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret. And wouldn’t you know it, perhaps Xaden will prove to be something more than just a dangerous enemy?

The series is being produced by Michael B. Jordan and his Outlier Society banner, with Yarros also involved as an executive producer and Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House) serving as showrunner and executive producer. The original novel became the first instalment in Yarros’ The Empyrean series and was followed by Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, with the saga planned to span five novels.

The author has also expanded the universe through Threshing Day, a collection of 13 short stories exploring the relationships between dragon riders and their dragons. However, it’s currently unclear whether any of that material will make its way into the television adaptation.

Stay tuned for more updates on Fourth Wing.
