You may see some army troops with fixed bayonets marching through the streets of Brampton this weekend as the Lorne Scots regiment celebrates its 160th birthday.

The Lorne Scots are a Canadian Armed Forces reserve infantry regiment which originated in Brampton in 1866, and later amalgamated with The Lorne Rifles in 1936.

Headquartered just around the block from Brampton’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 named after Major William Dwight Sharpe, soldiers from the regiment will march through downtown Brampton on Saturday for a ceremonial parade.

Peel Regional Police will have road closures in place as troops march from the Brampton Memorial Arena at 12:45 p.m. and head south on Elliot Street, east on Frederick Street, north on Main Street and past City Hall before arriving at Garden Square.

That’s where they will be met by Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown to honour the regiment’s more than 150 years in service to Canada, and a Drumhead Service “honouring the service and sacrifice of those who have gone before,” the regiment says.

There may be heavier traffic and delays along the parade route, and the Lorne Scots say troops will have fixed bayonets on their rifles during the march.

“Members of the public are asked to exercise caution as the parade marches through the streets, and are thanked in advance for their cooperation and understanding,” the Department of National Defence says in a release.

The regiment consists of members from the Peel, Dufferin and Halton regions, and the parade is part of a weekend of events celebrating the Lorne Scots 160-year milestone. Other events include a meet-and-greet on Friday in Halton Hills and an evening reception in Georgetown in Friday, and a sold-out semi-formal dinner in Mississauga featuring music from the Governor General’s Horse Guards bands and The Lorne Scots Pipes & Drums.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, and the centennial of Brampton’s Branch 15. The city and Legion are inviting residents to celebrate the branch’s centennial with events through to November.

With between 15 to 25 members of the Brampton community serving overseas and more awaiting deployment in 2027, Brampton City Council passed a motion earlier this summer to proclaim July 22 as Royal Canadian Legion Day.

The Lorne Scots museum in Brampton is currently closed for renovations, but you can find out more about the regiment by visiting www.lornescots.ca.
