{"id":935812,"date":"2026-10-17T00:46:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-17T00:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/935812\/"},"modified":"2026-10-17T00:46:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-17T00:46:10","slug":"mastodon-sculpture-on-display-in-highgate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/935812\/","title":{"rendered":"Mastodon sculpture on display in Highgate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A large wooden sculpture of a mastodon is now on display in Highgate.<\/p>\n<p>The art piece is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chatham-kent.ca\/visitck\/doandsee\/outdooractivities\/Pages\/Wood-Carvings.aspx\">one of many<\/a> being installed in communities across Chatham-Kent (CK) in an attempt to encourage people to visit the entire municipality.<\/p>\n<p>The mastodon was chosen to represent Highgate as bones from a real mastodon were discovered in the area in 1886. They are currently <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.statemuseum.nd.gov\/blog\/how-move-mastodon\">on display in North Dakota<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CK Mayor Darrin Canniff told CK News Today that he sees this as the centrepiece among all the sculptures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we put our pamphlet out about [all the sculptures], this will be on the front cover,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p>The piece was created by Bothwell&#8217;s Mike Winia, along with Paul Frenette and Jacob Frenette, the father-son duo on HGTV&#8217;s show &#8216;Carver Kings.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Winia said the sculpture was one of the biggest the three have ever worked on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve done some taller ones, but not this massive. [It&#8217;s] at least a couple of tonnes,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The piece took around 200 hours to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the sculpture is a plaque sharing the history of the mastodon fossil discovered in Highgate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.mynewstoday.ca\/i\/EkEElGzk\/740\" alt=\"\"\/>Plaque sharing the history of the mastodon fossil found in Highgate.
