A NASCAR driver spends an entire race trying to get somewhere faster than everybody else. The rest of us spend a surprising amount of time wishing life would slow down. Lewis Brice has found a country song in that contradiction, using the language of stock car racing to explore how quickly the years can disappear on his new single, “NASCAR Fast.”

The track brings together the excitement of racing and a subject that country songwriters have been returning to for generations: the strange way time seems to accelerate as people get older.

Brice explains the concept simply.

“‘NASCAR Fast’ is a song with a sound capturing a story of how fast life goes by using NASCAR terminology and imagery,” he says.

It’s a clever foundation for a country song because racing provides a ready-made vocabulary for experiences that have nothing to do with automobiles.

The starting line, the final lap, the checkered flag and the moments when everything seems to happen at once can all describe different stages of life.

And anyone who has watched a NASCAR race knows that a lot can change in a remarkably short amount of time.

A driver can spend hours working toward a particular position, only to have the entire race transformed by a single moment.

Life has an unfortunate habit of doing something similar.

One minute you’re looking forward to graduating, getting your first job or moving into your own place. The next, you’re wondering how the people you went to school with suddenly have teenagers.

The calendar rarely offers much explanation.

Country music has always had a particular affection for songs about the passage of time. Kenny Chesney’s “Don’t Blink,” Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This” and Tim McGraw’s “My Next Thirty Years” all approach the subject from different perspectives.

Brice’s decision to use NASCAR imagery gives the familiar theme a specific cultural setting.

Stock car racing and country music have shared audiences, personalities and traditions for decades. Both are deeply connected to Southern culture, and both have developed loyal communities around the experiences they celebrate.

The relationship extends well beyond songs about driving fast.

NASCAR events have frequently incorporated country performances, while country artists have drawn on racing imagery to write about competition, freedom, risk and the open road.

Brice’s “NASCAR Fast” fits comfortably within that history while focusing on something more reflective than the thrill of driving.

The song’s central idea is that speed can be exciting when you’re watching a race and considerably more unsettling when you’re watching your own life pass.

That’s a useful distinction, particularly for an artist looking to balance an energetic musical approach with a relatable subject.

Brice has built his career around a country sound that combines traditional storytelling instincts with a contemporary performance style.

His songs often draw from recognizable experiences, giving audiences something familiar to connect with even when the musical presentation is lively.

“NASCAR Fast” continues that approach by taking a subject nearly everyone understands and framing it through an activity with its own distinctive terminology.

The connection to racing also gave Brice an opportunity to discuss the song with an audience already familiar with its inspiration.

Following the release, he appeared on SiriusXM’s NASCAR Radio to talk about the story behind “NASCAR Fast.”

It’s an appropriate place to introduce the song.

NASCAR fans understand the sport’s peculiar relationship with time. Races are measured in laps, seconds and fractions of seconds, and the difference between a successful afternoon and a disappointing one can be extraordinarily small.

That precision makes racing an interesting comparison for the much less predictable business of living.

People plan their futures, establish goals and imagine how much time they’ll have to accomplish everything.

Then the years start passing faster than expected.

The comparison also works because racing involves constant movement, even when a driver is simply trying to maintain position.

Life can feel much the same way. People spend years working, raising families, maintaining relationships and dealing with everyday responsibilities, often without noticing how much has changed until they look back.

Brice’s song takes that recognizable experience and gives it a racing soundtrack.

The title is especially effective because “NASCAR Fast” communicates its central idea immediately.

You don’t need to know the difference between a restrictor plate and a pit stop to understand what he’s talking about.

You only need to have experienced that slightly alarming moment when something you remember happening recently turns out to have taken place 10 years ago.

The racing references add personality, but the subject reaches well beyond motorsports.

That gives “NASCAR Fast” an interesting position within Brice’s catalogue. It’s designed to carry energy while encouraging listeners to think about the time they’re spending.

And perhaps that’s the most amusing part of the whole concept.

NASCAR drivers spend their careers trying to shave seconds off the clock. Everybody listening to Lewis Brice’s “NASCAR Fast” might be perfectly happy to get a few of those seconds back.

A NASCAR driver spends an entire race trying to get somewhere faster than everybody else.
