When an addicted spouse loses so much money that the debt clears $1 million, there’s little or no recourse. <\/p>\n

That’s what happened to one Las Vegas woman named Kim who called into The Ramsey Show<\/a> recently, claiming her husband has lost over $1 million gambling, with few options to clear the debt. <\/p>\n

“My husband came clean to me about three years ago that he’d had a gambling addiction<\/a> and at that point he put us about $500,000 in debt,” the woman told the program hosts. “Over the last three years, I thought things were getting better. But in the last year, our debt has gone up over another $150,000. So we are well over a million dollars in debt now.” <\/p>\n

The woman asked whether selling the home, valued at roughly $750,000, would help, adding that the couple also had high-interest credit card debt. “I don’t know what to do, and we’re drowning,” she said. <\/p>\n

The gambling debt<\/a>, which also led to the husband raiding his wife’s 401(a) account, caused co-host Dr. John Deloney to call the situation “financial infidelity” and the woman’s home “incredibly unsafe.” Deloney gave a thumbs down to selling the house, which held about $152,000 in equity against the $1 million gambling shortfall. <\/p>\n

Instead, Deloney told <\/a>Kim, “I can’t in good conscience tell you to sell your house right now because he sounds like a guy that would go gamble it all away.” <\/p>\n

Being married to a gambling addict is bad for the budget <\/p>\n

Vegas family gambling drama shouldn’t come as a surprise, as wagering social ills are on the rise in a gambling-friendly U.S. <\/p>\n

Recent data from the National Council on Problem Gambling<\/a> shows 79% of Americans say gambling addictions are on the same level, or even worse, than other forms of addiction like alcohol or drug use. The same study shows 33% of American 21- to 44-year-olds placed a sports wager before age 21. <\/p>\n

“What we’re seeing is that the majority of Americans recognize gambling addiction as a legitimate behavioral health issue,” Heather L. Maurer, executive director of NCPG, said in a statement. “The next step is ensuring our public health systems, policies, and prevention strategies reflect that understanding.” <\/p>\n

Gambling platforms<\/a> aren’t taking aggressive steps to identify and stop the problem either. <\/p>\n

In a recent ProPublica story<\/a>, an investigative journalist spent 10 weeks wagering $22,000 like a problem gambler on major gambling platforms. ProPublica reported that $600 billion has been spent on U.S. gambling platforms in the last eight years. While gambling platforms do have some security measures in place, it’s easy for repeat offenders to keep pushing more cash onto the table, often with severe downsides. <\/p>\n

According to the Siena Research Institute<\/a>, about 31% of bettors say someone has expressed concern about their activity on online sportsbooks. That’s up from 23% in 2025 and 22% in 2024. Significant shares of bettors continue to say they have felt they bet more than they should, while 42% say they’ve periodically bet more than they should. <\/p>\n

Health and wellness professionals say that’s problematic, and that gambling platforms have made it easier for gambling addicts to keep placing bets. <\/p>\n

“Pro Publica’s recent reporting raises a legitimate concern when gambling-risk signals coexist with VIP incentives and continued promotions,” Dr. Michael Genovese, chief medical advisor at Ascendant New York, told Moneywise. “In its 2026 test, the reporter deliberately displayed behaviors associated with problem gambling and was subsequently invited into a VIP program.” <\/p>\n

Gambling addicts and their families should take note of red flags that signal a self-control problem. <\/p>\n

“Warning signs consumers should recognize include chasing losses, increasing the amount wagered, hiding the extent of gambling, and repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop,” Genovese noted. <\/p>\n

To fight back, families of gamblers can set deposit, wagering, spending or time limits where those are offered as well as self-exclusion. <\/p>\n

“These protections are useful, but they should not be treated as a substitute for treatment when gambling has become compulsive or harmful,” Genovese said. “NCPG standards specifically include self-exclusion and time\/money limits as core consumer-protection tools.” <\/p>\n

In the meantime, family members need to set financial guardrails <\/p>\n

As Deloney advises, the impact of toxic gambling<\/a> requires not only intervention, but also restrictions on accessing household financial accounts. <\/p>\n

“Protect income and credit through accounts you are legally entitled to control,” Dr. Lauren Grawert, clinical advisor at Retreat of Boston in Ludlow, Massachusetts, told Moneywise. “Change passwords on your own accounts, enable multifactor authentication, remove unauthorized device access, freeze your own credit with all three credit bureaus, review credit reports, and contact banks or retirement-plan administrators promptly about suspected unauthorized activity.” <\/p>\n

A credit freeze can also help prevent new accounts from being opened in your name, but don’t move, conceal, or restrict access to jointly owned assets without legal advice. <\/p>\n

“Whether one spouse is responsible for another spouse’s debts depends on the nature of the debt and applicable state law,” Grawert said. “If separation, bankruptcy or significant transfers of joint assets are being considered, a family-law or bankruptcy attorney should advise on the specifics before irreversible steps are taken.” <\/p>\n

As for anyone with a toxic gambling condition, it’s time to look in the mirror and get professional counseling, and as soon as possible. <\/p>\n

“Society and institutions have a role in protecting their people,” S\u00e9rgio Paulino, founder and CEO of Portugal-based All-Betters gaming company, told Moneywise. “However, adults in America, and everywhere, have the freedom of choice. Therefore, they also have a responsibility to protect themselves and their family members from actions that can endanger their lives.” <\/p>\n
