{"id":936992,"date":"2026-10-18T00:04:14","date_gmt":"2026-10-18T00:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/936992\/"},"modified":"2026-10-18T00:04:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-18T00:04:14","slug":"the-gazette-is-on-a-mission-to-find-solutions-to-the-citys-biggest-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/936992\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gazette is on a mission to find solutions to the city&#8217;s biggest problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, The Gazette is launching <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/tag\/fixing-montreal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fixing Montreal<\/a>, a new series where our journalists will be looking for solutions to some of the major challenges facing our city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Montreal has so many great things going for it \u2014 a beautiful location, distinct and charming neighbourhoods, generally reliable transit and transportation, lively nightlife and creative chefs, four universities, a great women\u2019s hockey team and a Canadiens team that everyone hopes might just win the Stanley Cup this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But community leaders, politicians and residents are also coping with a number of crises: <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/local-politics\/montreal-election-homeless-shelter-had-to-turn-away-people-in-need\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a growing homelessness emergency<\/a>, decaying infrastructure \u2014 from roads to water pipes to arenas, a housing shortage and an affordability crisis, maintaining and expanding public transit, a worker shortage, a doctor shortage and increasingly frustrating wait times for medical care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this occasional series, Gazette journalists will dig into some of these issues, exploring how they could be fixed \u2014 hopefully permanently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our first story looks at an issue <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/local-politics\/what-would-martinez-ferrada-do-in-first-100-days-montreal-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada promised to solve during her election campaign<\/a> in 2025: <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/fixing-montreal-homelessness-housing-crisis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reducing homelessness in the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gazette city hall reporter Jesse Feith, who has been covering homelessness for several years, spoke with former Quebec premier Pauline Marois, who earlier this year used her political capital to try to get a discussion about tackling homelessness into the public conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/fixing-montreal-homelessness-housing-crisis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Feith reports<\/a>, fixing the homelessness crisis will require more money \u2014 and fundamental changes to the way we approach housing and health in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crisis left unaddressed quickly becomes the status quo.
