Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!It didn’t take the Oilers long to get on the board, opening the scoring less than a minute into the game. Connor McDavid was sprung on the rush and used his speed to get in behind the Mammoth’s defence and out-waited the Mammoth netminder to deposit the puck into the net.

With just under seven minutes left in the opening frame, the Oilers extended their lead to 2-0. Seconds into their power play, McDavid found the returning Zach Hyman all alone in front of the net, with the winger smacking it home to extend the Oilers’ lead.

Less than a minute later, their lead grew to three. The Mammoth won an offensive zone faceoff, but the Mammoth defender bobbled the puck at the blue line, springing Mathieu Joseph on a breakaway. He fired it home above Karel Vejmelka’s glove to make it 3-0.

That was all the scoring in the first period, but midway through the second period, the Oilers got back on the board. Evan Bouchard’s shot from the point didn’t find its way to the net, but the puck bounced out to Kasperi Kapanen in the slot, ripping it off the post and in for his third of the season.

With about six minutes remaining in the second period, the Oilers put this game out of reach. Mattias Ekholm forced a turnover on a Mammoth rush, with McDavid getting on the puck first. The captain sprung Leon Draisaitl on a breakaway, with the German making no mistake in scoring his sixth of the season.

There was still a whole third period to play, and the Mammoth made it interesting thanks to a pair of goals 95 seconds apart early in the final frame. But any concern of a comeback was vanquished when McDavid used his speed for a breakaway, beating Sebastian Cossa to make it 6-2.

Takeaways…

Some things are bigger than hockey. Before we get started on the takeaways, I would like to offer my condolences to those affected by what happened in Wainwright, Alberta, shortly before the game.

As for the hockey game, Connor McDavid had another terrific game, scoring twice and picking up three assists to give him six goals and 23 points on the season. He’s on pace for 242 points this season. Just an unreal start to his season. His linemates, Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin, each finished with two points. McDavid and Draisaitl finished the game as a plus-4.

Evan Bouchard has also had a great start to his season, but he only picked up one assist in this game, finishing as a plus-3. His defence partner, Mattias Ekholm, also finished as a plus-3 and picked up a helper.

Zach Hyman made an immediate impact upon his return to the lineup, banging home a loose puck in front of the Mammoth net for his first of the season. Kasperi Kapanen scored his third of the season with a great shot, while Mathieu Joseph scored his first goal in nearly a year thanks to his first-period breakaway goal. It turned out to be the game winner.

For the past two off-seasons, I wrote about the top five-rated Oiler fights over at HockeyFights. Trent Frederic’s fight against Jack McBain will almost certainly be the highest-ranked Oiler fight this season, as the two squared off in a terrific tilt. Despite the 3-0 score, this fight was in retaliation for McBain’s hit on Draisaitl on Thursday

Tristan Jarry was fine when called up, stopping 26 of the 28 shots he faced for a .929 save percentage. It was another strong performance for the netminder, as he stopped all but one of the 20 shots he faced against the San Jose Sharks last Saturday.

The Oilers return home to kick off a five-game home stand. First up is a matchup against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. MT.

Cynthia Ryley Delaney is a Nation Network writer for DFOEdmonton, DFOCalgary, and Blue Jays Nation.
