largest sand sculpture park in the Algarve remains open

Visitors still have time to explore one of the Algarve’s most unusual attractions before the 2026 season ends.

Located beside the EN125, SandCity is the world’s largest sand sculpture park, showcasing works made from millions of grains of sand.

As reported by SandCity, this year’s exhibition is themed “Around the World in Sand”, taking visitors on a journey through different countries and cultures using famous landmarks, popular culture characters and recognisable figures from the collective imagination.

Architectural sculptures

The park’s creations range from familiar characters to impressive architectural structures, with some sculptures standing five or six metres tall and weighing several dozen tonnes.

Despite their size, the works are made using sand and water.

The sand is compacted and left to dry, creating a firm structure that supports intricate details and large sculptures.

This exhibition lets visitors discover different places and cultural references without leaving Portugal, making it a good option for families and tourists looking for something different to do in the region.

From a festival to a permanent attraction

SandCity traces its origins to the International Sand Sculpture Festival, known as FIESA, which began in 2003.

Initially held in Pêra before moving to Lagoa, the event developed into the attraction visitors can explore today.

This move helped establish a dedicated space for sand sculpture, an art form that transforms a temporary material into elaborate works.

Opening hours

From 14 September to 15 November, the park is open daily from 10am to 7pm, with last admission 30 minutes before closing.

As the attraction is outdoors, opening hours may change in adverse weather conditions.

Adult tickets for visitors aged 13 to 64 cost €11.90, while senior admission is €9.50.

Children aged six to 12 pay €5.90, and entry is free for children aged five and under.

Families can also buy a package for two adults and two children for €29.90 at the on-site ticket office, and groups of more than 10 people receive a 10 percent discount.

More to explore

SandCity offers more than just walking among the artworks.

Visitors can hire electric buggies to get around the grounds, while rest areas and a snack bar provide places to take a break.

Other facilities include a souvenir shop, a fish spa and an area where visitors can try creating their own sand sculptures.

The attraction also welcomes pets and offers more than 300 free parking spaces, making it easier for visitors to plan a car trip.

SandCity is located at Sítio dos Lombos in Lagoa, alongside the EN125, making it easy to reach for visitors exploring other parts of the Algarve.

Those hoping to see the exhibition this year have until 15 November to view the sculptures before the current season ends.

Visitors still have time to
