Defence Minister David McGuinty says people were killed and injured after an incident caused a major fire in Alberta.<\/p>\n

A major fire at a military base in the province of Alberta has caused several casualties, Canada\u2019s defence minister said.<\/p>\n

Fire crews scrambled late into the night on Saturday as fierce winds whipped flames beyond Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright, one of the busiest military training bases, and into the surrounding rural area.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,\u201d Minister of National Defence David McGuinty said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory,\u201d he said, adding that the situation was \u201cvery, very active and delicate\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Canadian broadcaster Global News said at least seven people were killed and dozens were injured, citing unnamed military sources.<\/p>\n

Global News reported that a gas line or a gas well was hit during a live-fire training, causing an explosion that sparked the blaze.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> said a \u201cserious incident\u201d had caused the fire, writing on social media: \u201cOur thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.\u201d<\/p>\n

A doctor at a hospital in Edmonton, 180km (112 miles) northwest of the base, told Canada\u2019s national broadcaster that the casualties were being taken to hospitals across the city as healthcare facilities around the base were \u201ccompletely overwhelmed\u201d by the number of people needing care.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis number of patients would overwhelm the city of Edmonton,\u201d Dr Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC News.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It\u2019s a disaster. It\u2019s a one in every 15-to-25-year disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire crossed the base\u2019s fence and spread rapidly in high winds.<\/p>\n

Canadian armed forces and federal, provincial and local authorities are coordinating the emergency response, McGuinty said.<\/p>\n

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire \u201csignificant and tragic\u201d and said it was affecting many military personnel.<\/p>\n

Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said he spoke to Carney and McGuinty to offer support. \u201cPray for Wainwright, everyone,\u201d he wrote on social media, urging people in the area to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.<\/p>\n

The fire comes two days before Albertans vote on whether the province, home to about five million people, should begin the legal process towards a binding referendum on seceding from Canada.<\/p>\n
