Not only was setting up both mowers relatively simple, but I was also impressed by how consistently they managed my lawn.

The two robot mowers in a nutshell

Sunseeker’s Elite X7 Gen 2 is a premium, wire-free robotic mower that uses built‑in Net‑RTK GPS plus upgraded VSLAM 2.0 vision for centimeter-level positioning, backed by a tri‑wheel all‑wheel‑drive chassis rated for complex terrain and slopes of up to 70%. Translating that into plain English, it doesn’t require physical boundary wires to help it navigate, and it can handle big inclines, which is something older generations of robot mowers struggled with.

The Sunseeker Elite X7 Gen 2 ready to go to work on my complicated lawn.Alan Bradley/CNET

It’s designed for lawns up to about 3,000 square meters, with dual floating cutting discs (35 cm width) and a 20 to 100mm electronic cutting-height range, all controlled through a well-designed and intuitive app that supports multizone mapping, virtual boundaries and edge-following modes.

The Sunseeker mower relies on an RTK antenna for navigation.Alan Bradley/CNET

Setting up the Sunseeker was a breeze. After unboxing, I was tasked with installing the base station and the RTK antenna, which is mounted on a post and needs a clear, unobstructed line of sight to the sky. Both mowers were simple to install; just bear in mind that both require power and need to be installed within range of an outlet. This is the downside of RTK technology, even in its relatively wire-free Net-RTK version, which is why many manufacturers have moved to lidar and camera-based navigation systems instead, which aren’t affected by weather.

Mapping via the app was also quick and simple. While there is an option to enable automapping, since my lawn doesn’t have defined physical boundaries with my neighbors, I opted for mapping by remote control. Driving the unit remotely with the app worked seamlessly, and I guided it around the edges of my property (including a separate zone that’s set apart from the main lawn by the driveway) in less than 15 minutes. Bridging the zones with connecting pathways worked without issue, and the Sunseeker was ready to launch.

The Mova Lidax Ultra AWD series skips RTK entirely and leans entirely on its UltraView 3.0 stack, a pair of 360-degree 3D lidar 1080p cameras, to auto‑map your lawn without wires or antennas, even under trees or near buildings. It combines four hub‑motor AWD drive with omni‑wheels, an independent suspension, and an 80 percent slope rating, plus dual floating discs (40 cm width) and a 3 to 10cm electronic cutting-height range.

Setting up the Mova was similar to the setup for the Sunseeker, though the Mova doesn’t require installing a separate antenna. It was a simple matter of positioning the base station and mapping my lawn by remotely controlling the mower through the app.

One minor, annoying wrinkle I encountered during mapping was that the Mova app doesn’t allow you to connect a zone with itself via distinct pathways, which, given the way that my lawn wraps around my house and is interrupted by the driveway, means I had to plot less efficient connections with the separate zone. It means a slightly longer traversal for the mower when it’s traveling back to the base station from the farthest points of the lawn, but it’s ultimately a nitpick and not a significant problem.

Handling ‘complicated’ lawn layouts

The Mova Lidax Ultra AWD after a test run in my lawn.Alan Bradley/CNET

If your lawn is broken into several patches connected by narrow passages, has trees that shadow GPS or mixes grass with decks, paths and beds, navigation is the most critical feature of any robot mower.

The Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 did a remarkable job of navigating my large, obstacle-cluttered lawn and reliably finding its way between zones day after day, while maintaining tight adherence to the mapped routes. Its blend of RTK and VSLAM helps it stay accurate when GPS quality dips and smart zoning plus pattern options (such as multiangle mowing, spot cutting and edge following) give you a lot of control over how it tackles each awkward area. I was also impressed by how closely it could approach obstacles and edges and continue mowing without interruption.

The Mova Lidax Ultra AWD is built for that kind of complexity from the ground up: It generates virtual boundaries using 3D lidar point clouds and camera data, so it can distinguish grass from patios, driveways or planting beds without you having to trench boundary wire or fuss with antenna placement. It lets you define up to 150 zones, dual maps for front and back lawns, no‑go areas around pools or play equipment and custom navigation channels to guide it through pinch points. It managed to maintain its line on slopes and uneven terrain in a way that feels closer to an autonomous vehicle than a traditional random‑pattern robot mower.

For complicated layouts in particular, that mix of lidar mapping, extensive zone flexibility and dual‑map support gives Mova a meaningful advantage. However, both mowers delivered neat, consistent mowing across my entire lawn over time.

Ruggedness, slopes and obstacles

Alan Bradley/CNET

On steep or rough lawns, both machines are far ahead of typical consumer robot mowers, but Mova has the more aggressive spec sheet.

Sunseeker’s X7 Gen 2 uses three‑wheel AWD, big off‑road front wheels and independent suspension to maintain traction and stability up to a claimed 70% gradient. In my testing, it almost never got stuck or required rescue. The floating deck and dual discs help it traverse uneven ground, and its IPX5 build and use of solid plastics give it a genuinely premium, durable feel.

Mova’s Lidax Ultra AWD ups that with a quoted 80% slope rating, four hub motors on all wheels, omni‑wheels for near‑zero turning radius, independent suspension and 6cm vertical obstacle climbing, all aimed squarely at difficult terrain. Combined lidar plus vision can identify hundreds of obstacle types, including small toys and animal shapes, allowing it to automatically slow down or reroute when needed. It also has dedicated animal‑safe modes and custom activity zones.

Alan Bradley/CNET

If your “complicated” lawn includes steep banks, uneven transitions or toys and pets that might frequently get in the way, Mova’s extra slope headroom and richer obstacle sensing are a strong argument in its favor. While I do have some significant slopes, particularly in my back lawn, none are steep enough to challenge the 70% gradient claim, much less Mova’s 80%. That said, neither mower encountered any issues scaling the comparatively gentle slopes on my property, and they were even able to manage the more complex geometry around the drainage channel that bisects the backyard.

Smart features, security and ownership

Ownership experience may be where your preference tips one way or the other.

Sunseeker’s app is one of the best in the category. It’s got intuitive zone controls, clear status displays and extras like live weather visuals for the mower’s location. Its 4G‑GPS anti‑theft module offers real‑time tracking, geofencing with alerts, power‑off protection and a bundled 24- to 60-month Net‑RTK plus 4G subscription before you need to pay a modest annual fee. The combination of proven hardware with a polished app and a big brand footprint is a winning combination, smoothing out a lot of the rough edges of owning a robot mower.

Sunseeker’s app made it easy and intuitive to map zones of my lawn.Alan Bradley/CNET

Mova adds layers of security and surveillance functions. It includes GPS tracking with three years of included 4G service, off‑map alarms, an AirTag compartment and a TrueGuard suite that can use the mower’s cameras for live video, human detection, auto patrol and two‑way audio when it’s off duty. It also leans into customization with pattern‑painting mowing paths and multiple direction modes (such as checkerboard or crisscross) for aesthetic striping effects.

If you like the idea of your mower doubling as a low‑speed yard sentry and you want maximum remote control over complex schedules and zones, Mova’s ecosystem is more adventurous. If you’d rather stick with a simpler, more traditional lawn‑care companion, Sunseeker is the more conventional option.

Which one should you buy?

The best choice comes down to a number of factors, but the top-level takeaway is this: The Mova Lidax Ultra AWD series is better equipped overall, while Sunseeker’s Elite X7 Gen 2 remains the safer bet if you want proven RTK-grade accuracy and a slightly more mature ecosystem.

      MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD

For a rugged, complicated lawn with steep slopes, shaded zones, multiple patches and lots of obstacles, the Mova LiDAX Ultra AWD series is the stronger technical fit, thanks to its RTK‑free Lidar mapping, more extreme slope rating, extensive zone management and remarkable obstacle detection. It sits at around $1,799 at full price, though it’s often on sale for significantly less, sometimes available closer to the $1,399 mark. Even at full retail price, however, it’s in a lower price bracket than many comparable robot mowers, and not requiring a RTK antenna can be especially useful on shaded, tree-filled properties, where satellite-dependent navigation can be less reliable.

If your priority is bulletproof RTK accuracy, slightly more conservative obstacle handling, and a mature app experience from a well-established brand, the Sunseeker Elite X7 Gen 2 is an excellent choice and one of the most capable AWD mowers you can buy today. That said, it retails for around $2,700, nearly a full thousand dollars pricier than the Mova. If your property has unimpeded sky visibility, however, and if you value its excellent obstacle handling and mature ecosystem, the added premium may be worth it.

For buyers who do not need the Mova’s or Sunseeker’s full AWD, steep-slope focus, the $2,500 Ecovacs Goat A3000 Pro from our best robot lawnmower list is a compelling high-end alternative for less complex medium-to-large lawns, and is often discounted below its standard price.
