\n\tJesse Eisenberg<\/a> has said he was frozen out of studio movies after winning a Razzie for Zack Snyder\u2019s \u201cBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Razzies \u2014 short for Golden Raspberry Awards \u2014 are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that \u201chonor\u201d the supposedly worst films of the year. They are traditionally handed out the night before the Oscars.<\/p>\n

\n\tEisenberg, who played arch villain Lex Luther opposite Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, was allocated a worst supporting actor Razzie for his part in the 2016 superhero flick. <\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough supposedly lighthearted, the \u201caward\u201d damaged his acting career, Eisenberg admitted during a screen talk Sunday as part of the BFI London Film Festival<\/a>, causing him to step back from acting and instead lean in to writing and directing. (Eisenberg\u2019s latest directorial effort, \u201cThe Debut\u201d<\/a> starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, is closing LFF Sunday night).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cListen, a lot of it just came from fear,\u201d he said of his career pivot. \u201cI couldn\u2019t get into movie studio parts anymore because I had won a Raspberry Award from [being in the] \u2018Batman\u2019 movie \u2026 and I saw the trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you\u2019re an actor, you\u2019re constantly panicked about \u2018Am I on an upslope or a downslope?\u2019\u201d he explained. \u201cBecause there\u2019s no plateau. Acting is just this unstable, awful industry where you are either on the treadmill and you\u2019re doing okay and you\u2019re running up or you are yesterday\u2019s news and it\u2019s awful. And if you\u2019re a paranoid person like me, you see it way in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I was like, I\u2019ve got to direct movies. That\u2019s why I started writing them, just to kind of keep my career afloat, really.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBatman v Superman,\u201d which opened globally with an impressive $424.1 million box office, took home four Razzies overall, including for worst screenplay, worst sequel and worst screen combo for Cavill and Affleck. Eisenberg has previously said the film\u2019s \u201cpoor\u201d reception<\/a> damaged his career.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the BFI talk, the actor said his takeaway from the experience was that he shouldn\u2019t star in any more superhero films. \u201cThe industry tells you what they want from you,\u201d Eisenberg said. \u201cThe industry did not want me to be in a superhero movie, and if you\u2019re smart and self-aware, you learn that quickly. And you know, it\u2019s the unsuccessful actor that goes \u2018No, I want to be in more of those.\u2019 It\u2019s not going to happen and they don\u2019t want you there and they wouldn\u2019t have given you a Raspberry Award if they wanted you there. That\u2019s an award for bad acting. And so the industry tells you what it wants and if you want a career in the arts you have to follow the things that you\u2019re being told are liked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne role the industry did want to see him reprise was that of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, given Eisenberg was nominated for a best actor Oscar for playing the tech titan in 2010\u2019s \u201cThe Social Network,\u201d penned by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher.<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite that, the actor has been adamant he did not want to return<\/a> in the recently-released follow-up \u201cThe Social Reckoning,\u201d which Sorkin both wrote and directed. He didn\u2019t expand on that decision during his LFF talk, other than to say the \u201ccompanion movie,\u201d as it has been dubbed, \u201cis quite different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe was more open about working with Kieran Culkin<\/a> in Eisenberg\u2019s sophomore directorial effort \u201cA Real Pain,\u201d which was released in 2024. The movie scored Eisenberg a nod for best screenplay and Culkin a best supporting actor win<\/a> at last year\u2019s Oscars, but the film could have turned out<\/a> very differently.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe didn\u2019t know if Kieran was ever going to show up to Poland,\u201d Eisenberg revealed. \u201cEmma Stone is producing the movie. She personally took him on the plane to Poland [where it was shooting] because we didn\u2019t know if he was going to show up. She sent me a video of him going through customs, saying \u2018We are here!\u2019 and then he still was late.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd Culkin, who\u2019d recently come off HBO\u2019s mega-hit \u201cSuccession,\u201d was adamant he wanted Eisenberg to use a similar \u201cspontaneous\u201d shooting style, which had not been part of the plan. \u201cWe\u2019re like, what\u2019s best for the movie?\u201d the actor\/director recalled as he tried to work out what to do. \u201cAnd I guess what\u2019s best for the movie is probably following this live wire around because that\u2019s the engine of the movie anyway. If he had a small part, you\u2019d be like, \u2018We just have to tell this guy to shut up,\u2019 you know?
