Vancouver elects Pete Fry as mayor

One of the election’s most notable results came from Vancouver, where Green Party candidate Pete Fry defeated incumbent mayor Ken Sim of ABC Vancouver.

According to the city’s October 18 unofficial election results, Fry received 98,494 votes, compared with Sim’s 67,467.

Vancouver also elected 10 city councillors, with candidates from the Green Party, COPE, OneCity and ABC Vancouver securing seats.

The city reported more than 209,000 ballots cast, representing voter turnout above 43 percent, an increase from 36 percent in 2022.

Mayoral leadership changes across the region

Several other Metro Vancouver municipalities are preparing for leadership transitions.

In Surrey, former mayor Doug McCallum defeated incumbent Brenda Locke, returning to the position he previously held.

Richmond’s mayoral race placed Rob Howard ahead of his competitors in reported unofficial returns, while Craig Hodge emerged as Coquitlam’s mayoral winner.

Daniel Fontaine won New Westminster’s mayoral contest, while Kirk LaPointe defeated incumbent Mark Sager in West Vancouver.

In Delta, Melissa Granum emerged victorious, while Delaney Mack and Jay Lundgren won their respective mayoral races in the City and Township of Langley.

Port Moody, Maple Ridge and White Rock also reported new mayoral winners.

Incumbent mayors retain their positions

Not all municipalities experienced a change in leadership.

Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley won another term, while Brad West retained his position in Port Coquitlam.

On the North Shore, Linda Buchanan was re-elected in the City of North Vancouver, while Mike Little secured another term in the separate District of North Vancouver.

Nicole MacDonald also won re-election in Pitt Meadows.

Meanwhile, Doug Richardson in Anmore, Jamie Ross in Belcarra and Andrew Leonard on Bowen Island were elected by acclamation, meaning they faced no opposing mayoral candidates.

Official declarations still pending

Although election-night returns have identified the leading candidates and reported winners across the region, some municipalities have yet to complete their official declarations.

Vancouver and Richmond are scheduled to formally declare their election results by October 21, 2026.

The results remain preliminary where official declarations have not yet been completed, and municipal chief election officers are responsible for confirming the final figures.

The newly elected councils will assume responsibility for local matters including housing, transportation, infrastructure, public safety and municipal services during the next four-year term.

ASM, Philippine Canadian InquirerOctober 19, 2026 VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Metro Vancouver’s political landscape is set for changes…

[194298
49,48,321811,10758,321812,55
post-938980","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vancouver","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-canada-election-2026","tag-headline","tag-new-mayors-canada","tag-vancouver
["GET
