Helen Peters,.

Police say on Sept. 29, the woman in her 80s was walking westbound on Roblin and crossing at the intersection of Hunterspoint when a vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign and struck her. She was taken to hospital in stable condition but died of her injuries Oct. 15.

The driver was identified and police are investigating.

In total, police reported a total of eight collisions involving pedestrians resulting in serious injuries and one fatality. Incidents range from parking lots, marked crosswalks and controlled intersections.

“The best way to keep ourselves safe is actually to make eye contact with each other out there on the road. As motorists, make eye contact with pedestrians, you know that they’ve seen you coming and vice versa,” said Peters.

On Sept. 11, police say a child was struck in the retail parking lot in the 1600 block of Kenaston Boulevard. The child and an adult left a store and were crossing at a pedestrian corridor when a vehicle cut through the parking lot and ran the child over, police say. The child was taken to hospital in unstable condition, but later upgraded to stable.

“Whether you’re a motor vehicle driver or you’re a pedestrian, having the right of way means you may cross if it’s safe to do so. But even standing at the side of the road, what we see across all of these instances is that pedestrians are the most vulnerable group of people that share the roadway with everybody else,” said Peters.

WPS highlighted the importance of visibility, saying that if you’re stepping out and it’s dark outside, wear something bright to ensure drivers will see you.

“This isn’t just about who’s at fault. This is about keeping each other safe and doing everything we can as drivers, motor vehicles or pedestrians to help each other out and navigate our roads,” said Peters.

Police say multiple investigations have led to charges, including criminal charges related to impaired driving. Those collisions are as follows:

Sept. 28: Three children were hit at Plaza Drive and Pembina Highway after a woman in her 70s at the wheel of a Honda Fit was driving west on Plaza Drive when she ran a red light and struck a Ford Fusion at the intersection, causing her vehicle to mount the sidewalk.

Oct. 5, 2 a.m.: A pedestrian — a man in his 30s — was struck by a vehicle that was making a turn on Arlington Street at Wellington Avenue.
