A win for the second option would instead direct the province to begin the legal process required for a future binding referendum on separation.

What is shaping views on the Alberta referendum?

For some respondents, the answer was simple: unity.

“A united Canada is a strong Canada,” Another Albertan, Debbie, said the province needs “more say about what happens in Alberta with Alberta’s resources.”

Rick Holdaway from Ontario put the tension more directly: “If they cared so much about the people and treated them with respect, this wouldn’t even be an issue.”

That sentiment reflects the Yahoo poll, where Alberta-Ottawa relations ranked ahead of the economy, energy and natural resources, cost of living, and Indigenous and treaty rights.

What could Alberta gain — or lose?

Responses were sharply divided.

“Gain control of their resources and decisions,”
