The Calgary Police Service<\/a> has identified improvements to how it manages major searches, handles public tips and co-ordinates resources after completing an internal review of its response to the disappearance of Parker Wells.<\/p>\n

According to a CPS news release, the July search for the 11-year-old boy<\/a> was the largest missing person operation in the organization’s history. The investigation generated approximately 1,000 formal tips, more than 90,000 direct social media messages, thousands of emails and about 10 terabytes of CCTV footage.<\/p>\n

The review was to determine the efficacy of CPS’ existing operational standards and practices, not to assess the performances of specific individuals or the circumstances of Parker’s disappearance. CPS also emphasized that its report does not conclude that the outcome would have been different had these changes been in place.<\/p>\n

“We identified opportunities to build stronger systems around our people so future responses don’t depend as heavily on extraordinary individual effort. The goal is to improve how we support members, manage information and coordinate resources during large-scale incidents,” CPS Chief Katie McLellan said in the release.<\/p>\n

Recommendations include creating a centralized system to manage investigative tips and evidence, clarifying command responsibilities, improving staffing and resource co-ordination and investing in technology and officer wellness during prolonged operations. These recommendations will be used in future training and police development.<\/p>\n

CPS acknowledged that renewed discussions surrounding the case could be difficult for Parker’s family and the community, but said the release of this information is necessary for transparency and accountability.<\/p>\n

In a statement given to CPS, Parker’s family thanked those who participated in the search and the organizations that assessed the response.<\/p>\n

“As we continue to grieve the loss of Parker, we respectfully ask for privacy and understanding. We are navigating an unimaginable loss, and we appreciate our space being respected as we work toward healing. We remain deeply thankful for the compassion, support, and care shown to our family and to Parker throughout this journey,” read the statement.<\/p>\n

The review also acknowledged the separate work examining the initial 911 response<\/a> and provincial public-alerting procedures, but that Calgary 911 will remain an “essential partner” for CPS.<\/p>\n
