Hazeldean Bakery opened its doors again with new owners after the previous owner for 16 years, Lucy Lu retired last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s great to be open, the community\u2019s been waiting and we\u2019ve been waiting, but we\u2019re open now and it\u2019s fantastic,\u201d said Luke Wood, the new owner.<\/p>\n
Wood moved from Yellowknife to tackle the shop\u2019s revival with a friend in the baking industry.<\/p>\n

Lu, meanwhile, also crossed provincial borders to support the reopening, saying she has been enjoying retirement in British Columbia.\u00a0\u201cVery, very relaxed,\u201d Lu said. \u201cI have the time to learn how to plant flowers in the garden.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, several members in the community showed up to greet the new owners \u2014 and secure some free goodies \u2014 just as they had come out to say Lu goodbye last December when she retired.<\/p>\n
Tove Hannell, who moved into the neighbourhood from Sweden, says she was pleased to see the bakery open.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been glancing at this place and wondering \u2018when is it gonna open?\u2019 so I\u2019m very happy today,\u201d Hannell said.<\/p>\n
Colin Kot, was one of the bakery\u2019s regular customers returned to see Lu ran the shop for a third of its 50-year lifespan.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe product is good, it\u2019s affordable, and Lucy\u2019s just an all-around nice person,\u201d Kot said. \u201cThis is something needed in the community. I mean, you don\u2019t get better baked goods than Lucy\u2019s bakery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lu herself will only be in the city for a couple more days this week to help train her successors, who say they will take her guidance for at least a month before cooking up their own ideas.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully it works out,\u201d Wood said. \u201cThe community has been very supportive, so I\u2019m pretty sure it will.\u201d<\/p>\n
