This annual event takes place at the Surrey Arts Centre on November 14 and 15 from noon to 4 p.m. Free admission and parking.

The tote bags feature SAGA’s logo with the Gallery’s 50th anniversary logo on one side and an artwork by local artist Atheana Picha on the other, inspired by West Coast baskets and knitting patterns. The Indigenous-owned brand Decolonial Clothing screenprinted these zippered, 100% heavy cotton canvas bags that include an inner secure zippered pouch. They measure 20” wide by 15” high. Funds raised from the sales of the tote bags ($50) will support SAGA in purchasing artworks for the Gallery’s permanent collection.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the bags, Picha says, “I designed this tote bag while working on knitting patterns. Northwest Coast knitting initially reflected patterns from basketry, and Salish baskets have imbricated geometric patterning and figurative work such as butterflies, human figures, and dogs. Knitting is much faster than basketry, which allowed for further experimentation with patterning. Contemporary Salish sweaters seem to be more heavily patterned with figures such as whales, birds, deer, and salmon. This tote bag is part of the history of containers on the Northwest Coast now. Woven baskets, knitted bags, and canvas totes all have become part of our everyday life.”

At the market, shoppers will find one-of-a-kind pieces by dozens of artists from Surrey and the Lower Mainland. There will be pottery, jewellery, art cards, photographs, paintings, stickers, children and adult books, linocuts, and more! Vendors include Foxy Verve Atelier, Sapphorica Creations, Dunia Tozy, Gordon Rebelato, Katina Giesbrecht, By the Sea Jewellery, and many more whom are listed on the Gallery’s website. All saga shop artists and market vendors are SAGA members. Longtime SAGA member, Gallery instructor, and ceramicist Murray Sanders will be doing live demos of wheel throwing and will have a table of his pottery for sale as well.

SAGA members receive a 10% discount, and if visitors are not a member already, they can become one onsite.

About Surrey Art Gallery Association

Surrey Art Gallery Association (SAGA) is a non-profit society that offers its members the opportunity to participate in and respond to contemporary art and be part of a community that actively supports Surrey Art Gallery. sagabc.com

About Surrey Art Gallery

Founded in 1975, Surrey Art Gallery presents contemporary art by local, national, and international artists, including digital and audio art.
