Pro Football Hall of Fame running back and Southern University football head coach Marshall Faulk revealed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.<\/p>\n
Faulk revealed the news on Dr. Sandeep Thakka’s “Caring Neurologist” podcast.<\/p>\n
The former Indianapolis Colts and St. Louis Rams superstar said he has been dealing with symptoms of the disease for a year-and-a-half. He first noticed an issue while he was playing golf.<\/p>\n
“The rigidity in my hand, just sometimes after I play a lot or I practice a lot,” Faulk said, per Toyloy Brown III<\/a> of The Advocate. “I just thought it was, you know, normal nerves when putting and stuff like that.”<\/p>\n During a biannual physical, Faulk’s doctor advised him to get the situation checked out. A diagnosis followed, but thankfully, Faulk said he received his diagnosis in the early stages of the disease and considers himself “one of the lucky ones” for doing so.<\/p>\n Numerous ex-NFL players have revealed neurodegenerative disease diagnoses in recent years.<\/p>\n Of note, quarterback Brett Favre<\/a> (in 2024) and running back Ahman Green<\/a> (in 2026) told the public they were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.<\/p>\n Running back Chris Johnson revealed<\/a> last June that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).<\/p>\n The 53-year-old Faulk was one of his generation’s greatest players. He was a versatile running back equally adept at rushing and receiving. Over his 12-year career (1994-2005), Faulk amassed 12,279 rushing yards and 6,875 receiving yards for 19,154 yards from scrimmage, ranking fifth all time<\/a> in that category.<\/p>\n During the Rams’ 1999 Super Bowl season, Faulk broke the 1,000-yard barrier in rushing (1,381 yards) and receiving (1,048 yards). He is one of three running backs to ever do so in a single season (Roger Craig, 1985; Christian McCaffrey, 2019).<\/p>\n Faulk was a first-ballot Hall of Famer, inducted as part of the class of 2011. He is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame after his time at San Diego State (5,562 all-purpose yards, 62 career touchdowns, 1992 Heisman Trophy runner-up).<\/p>\n Faulk served as Colorado’s running backs coach last year before becoming Southern’s head coach this season.
