SURREY, N.D. (KMOT) \u2013 Surrey Public School may see some needed expansions after all.<\/p>\n
Kyler Collom headed to Surrey to learn more about the district\u2019s second attempt this year to pass a bond to fund an addition to the school.<\/p>\n
In Surrey, school administrators are optimistic about an upcoming bond vote this November, hoping to look forward to some new renovations in the school as well as updating some safety hazards.<\/p>\n
Fourteen years after their construction, these portable classrooms at Surrey public school are still in use.<\/p>\n
The district wants to replace them and their 10 total classrooms, and replace them with an addition to the current building with eight new rooms.<\/p>\n
A 2024 report from the state Fire Marshal drew attention to several safety issues and code violations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat fire report says that our portables are too close to the building, the ramp that we have up there, the breezeway we call it, is not up to code, its kind of a fire hazard because its all wood, so its just a lot of code violations,\u201d said Steve Bucks, Surrey Superintendent.<\/p>\n
A bonding measure in June to fund expansions garnered a majority but just missed the 60% threshold to pass.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Steve Bucks is hoping for a different outcome in November.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my experience with a spring vote, generally fewer people turn out, and tieing it with this Novembers vote, I think you\u2019ll have more people show up to the polls and make their decisions, and i\u2019m hoping for some positives,\u201d said Bucks.<\/p>\n
For Property owners, the decision means weighing the schools needs against the roughly $160 yearly increase to their property tax bill. <\/p>\n
If it fails again, Bucks says the district will face some tough choices on where to house the nearly 140 students that call those portables home each day.<\/p>\n
Officials are hosting an open house meeting next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the school in the multi-purpose room to answer questions with the public and further discuss the upcoming bond vote in Surrey. <\/p>\n
