As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, as well as the action in Ningbo where Elena Rybakina headlines the day’s play. But who do you think will advance to Saturday’s semifinals?

WTA Osaka Quarterfinal Predictions
Katie Boulter vs Antonia Ruzic

Head-to-head: first meeting

Katie Boulter has looked sharp so far at WTA Osaka, following her opening-round victory over Himeno Sakatsume with a dominant 6-2 6-1 win over Viktorija Golubic. Her serve and aggressive groundstrokes have allowed her to take control of rallies early, and she will aim to maintain that level against Antonia Ruzic, who has already demonstrated her ability to trouble established names. Ruzic earned her place in the quarterfinals with a comeback victory over Paula Badosa and then advanced when Kayla Day retired while trailing 6-4.

Boulter’s first-strike tennis should be a major asset, particularly if she serves well and prevents Ružić from settling into longer rallies. Ruzic has the confidence to make this competitive, but Boulter’s recent form and experience give her the edge. If the Brit continues to dictate with her serve and forehand, she should be able to reach the semifinals.

Prediction: Boulter in 2

Talia Gibson vs Ashlyn Krueger

Head-to-head: first meeting

Talia Gibson defeated Harriet Dart and Sinja Kraus in straight sets, while Krueger followed up her upset of sixth seed Janice Tjen with a convincing win over Lanlana Tararudee. Both players have looked comfortable on the hard courts, setting up a contest that could hinge on who controls the baseline first.

Gibson’s aggressive approach and ability to take the ball early make her dangerous when she finds her range. She will look to dictate with her groundstrokes and put Krueger under pressure on return. The Australian has shown good composure in the key moments so far, but Krueger’s clean ball-striking and powerful first serve give her the weapons to take control of shorter rallies.

Krueger’s win over Tjen was a particularly encouraging result, and she has maintained that level in the following round. Gibson has the game to challenge her, but the American’s ability to generate pace and finish points efficiently could make the difference in a close contest.

Prediction: Krueger in 3

Mar 24, 2025; Miami, FL, USA; Ashlyn Krueger (USA) hits a forehand against Zheng Qinwen (CHN)(not pictured) on day seven of the Miami Open at Hard Rock Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images
Mary Stoiana vs Katerina Siniakova

Head-to-head: first meeting

Mary Stoiana’s breakthrough run at WTA Osaka continues against Katerina Siniakova, who brings considerably more experience at tour level. The American qualifier has already defeated seventh seed Oleksandra Oliynykova and home player Moyuka Uchijima to reach the quarterfinals, showing that she can handle the pressure of a big opportunity.

Siniakova has also produced strong results, beating second seed Peyton Stearns after the American retired and then defeating Magda Linette 6-4 6-1. Her tactical awareness, ability to change the pace and willingness to use the court make her a difficult opponent for players who rely solely on power. Stoiana will need to remain patient while taking her opportunities to attack.

The importance of the American’s confidence should not be underestimated, particularly after her impressive run through qualifying and the main draw. However, Siniakova has a more established record against high-level opposition and is adept at finding solutions when matches become complicated. If she maintains the level she showed against Linette, she should have enough variety and experience to progress.

Prediction: Siniakova in 3

Ann Li vs Lilli Tagger

Head-to-head: first meeting

Ann Li will face one of the tournament’s most exciting young players in Lilli Tagger, who has already made a statement by defeating fifth seed Liudmila Samsonova and then overcoming Tereza Valentova in straight sets. The Austrian teenager has shown impressive composure throughout the week, combining clean groundstrokes with the confidence to take the initiative against higher-ranked opponents.

Li has looked increasingly settled after recovering from a set down to beat Emerson Jones in the opening round. She followed that with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win over Zeynep Sönmez, demonstrating how effective her consistency and court coverage can be when she finds her rhythm. The American’s greater experience on the WTA Tour should help her manage the pressure, but Tagger’s current form makes this a challenging assignment.

The key will be whether Li can extend rallies and force Tagger to play extra shots rather than allow the teenager to dictate. Tagger has the momentum to make this competitive, but Li’s consistency and ability to grind through difficult exchanges give her a narrow advantage.

Prediction: Li in 2

Main photo credit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters/Jerry Lai

The WTA Osaka Open quarterfinals promise fireworks, with four intriguing matches on the slate in Japan with the…

[442
49,48,82,593
post-942989","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-sports","tag-tennis
["GET
