It stems from a personal experience that left him determined to help families dealing with childhood illness.

His nephew was diagnosed with leukemia in 1987 and died at age 17 on Halloween night in 1992. During those years, Sousa’s sister stayed at Ronald McDonald House off and on for five years.

“I mean, without Ronald McDonald House, like, I don’t know how people with sick children make it,” Sousa said. “They’re a godsend.”

The experience stayed with him, and he decided that if there was an organization he would dedicate himself to supporting, it would be Ronald McDonald House.

Last 30 Days: 61,788 Votes

All Time: 1,596,445 Votes

    2311 VOTES
What was the biggest factor in deciding your vote for mayor?

Around 2013 or 2014, Sousa began working toward making that commitment a reality. It took a couple of years to put the finances and arrangements together before the first concert series launched in 2016.

He initially intended it as a one-time event to raise awareness of the charity. Instead, the concerts became an annual undertaking, growing well beyond his expectations. The series took a break during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

The next milestone is the 10th annual McBowl, scheduled for May 26 to 30, 2027. Honeymoon Suite, which has performed at the event since its inception, is returning for the anniversary show on Friday, May 28, after sitting out the most recent edition.

Sousa said the full lineup is expected to be announced in the first week of December.

The festival has attracted visitors from across Canada and beyond, with ticket buyers travelling from the United States, Germany, Venezuela and the United Kingdom. Sousa describes it as North America’s largest indoor music festival, based on its duration (5 straight days) rather than its attendance.

Classic Bowl can accommodate roughly 1,000+ people for the events, depending on the setup.

The concerts have also created a community of their own. Sousa said some attendees return year after year, including people who have made friends at the events and use the annual festival as an opportunity to reunite.

Kevin Alberga of Mississauga said he looks forward to shows, especially the ones that feature top bands from the 1980s, ones that were featured on radio station CFNY.

“I get to see some of my favourite musical acts without leaving Mississauga,” said Alberga. “There’s free parking and the shows are inexpensive and the band members enjoy interacting with the audience. It’s a great atmosphere.”

The reach extends beyond the venue, too. Sousa said hotels and restaurants in the surrounding area have benefited from the influx of visitors, with some restaurants now contacting him to find out when the concerts are scheduled so they can prepare for the crowds.

The festival is traditionally held after Victoria Day weekend, which coincides with the U.S. Memorial Day weekend, making it convenient for American fans to travel north.

For Sousa, the charitable benefits go beyond the money raised. He said Ronald McDonald House has told him the publicity generated by the concerts is invaluable because it introduces more people to the organization’s work and can lead to additional donations.

His approach reflects his background in marketing and his position as a director at Classic Bowl. Rather than relying solely on conventional advertising, he sees live music as a way to bring customers to the business, create a memorable experience and support causes that matter.

“I determined a long time ago to utilize music as a vehicle to promote our business,” Sousa said.

He acknowledges that bringing international performers to Mississauga is expensive. Travel, accommodation and artist fees can add up quickly, and he said the concerts generally operate at a loss.

The payoff, he explained, comes from promoting Classic Bowl, giving fans an enjoyable experience and raising money and awareness for charitable organizations.

McBowl is only one part of the operation.

The Rock and Bowl Sessions offer a different kind of concert, designed to make audiences feel closer to the performers. Sousa describes the shows as intimate and interactive, with a question-and-answer component that lets fans engage with artists beyond the music.

He wants concertgoers to feel they are getting a more personal experience than they might at a large venue, where the distance between performers and the audience can be greater.

The 2026-27 Rock and Bowl schedule includes Chalk Circle on Nov. 29, a Jan. 31 performance by Al and Marc of Prism, China Crisis on Feb. 21 and 22, Gene Loves Jezebel on March 21, The Box on April 25 and The Secret Show on May 30.

The Pop Up Shows, meanwhile, are more spontaneous.

Sousa said the concept developed around the time of the pandemic, giving artists an opportunity to arrange a performance when they are touring, travelling through the area or have an additional date to fill.

Rather than following the same annual schedule as McBowl or the planned run of Rock and Bowl Sessions, the Pop Up Shows emerge when opportunities arise.

Michael Sadler, for example, performed as part of the Pop Up series before becoming associated with Rock and Bowl. The format gives artists flexibility while providing Mississauga audiences with more opportunities to see performers who might otherwise bypass the city.

Sousa’s roster of past acts includes Jesus Jones, The Art of Noise, Information Society, members of Spandau Ballet and members of Simple Minds, along with a range of Canadian artists.

He said he particularly enjoys working with musicians whose music has had a personal impact on him. Organizing a show involves considerable time and effort, and seeing artists he admires perform is part of the reward.

But the larger motivation is also about where those shows take place.

Although Sousa books concerts at venues in Toronto, he said even travelling downtown has become increasingly difficult, sometimes taking hours because of traffic.

He believes residents of a city as large as Mississauga should have access to quality live entertainment without always having to leave their community.

Classic Bowl offers free parking for concertgoers, with hotels and restaurants nearby. For fans who want to avoid the traffic, parking costs and other logistics associated with a trip downtown, the venue provides a convenient alternative in the western GTA.

Sousa said the concerts help improve quality of life by giving residents more opportunities to enjoy entertainment close to home.

He also believes the combination of music and charitable causes creates a particularly effective way to bring people together. Attendees enjoy a show, the business benefits from the exposure, and charities receive both fundraising support and publicity.

That approach has grown beyond Classic Bowl itself. Sousa said he also helps organize concerts at other venues, golf courses and private properties, often arranging for donations to go to Ronald McDonald House rather than charging a fee for his work.

One example is an annual concert at a friend’s cottage at Stony Lake. Sousa said the event raised $100,000 for charity in 2025, with total donations over several years exceeding a quarter of a million dollars.

For Sousa, those projects reflect the same principle that launched the original McBowl concerts: music can be a powerful way to bring people together for a good cause.

At Classic Bowl, that idea has developed into a program that offers three different experiences, from a multi-day charity festival to close-up performances and pop-up dates with touring musicians.

For local music fans, it means familiar artists can turn up in an unexpected setting, without the need to head downtown. And for Sousa, a personal commitment to helping families has become a way to combine his passion for music, his work in marketing and his desire to bring more entertainment to Mississauga.

INSAUGA Canada’s Editorial Standards and Policies

Stay in the know.

Subscribe now to receive our daily email of today’s top stories in your city!

Well-known music acts arrive in Mississauga regularly thanks to the work of Ed Sousa and Classic Bowl.
