With AXL, Dr. Daniel Wigdor plans to help launch 50 AI companies in the next five years and keep them in Canada.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s difficulty capitalizing on its innovations is well known. But in the emergent AI race, it is a big problem<\/a>, with the potential to lock the country out of the next era of tech\u2014an era that we helped to start<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So, why is it happening, and how do we stop it?<\/p>\n

\u201cA win for AXL is that, ten years from now, instead of nine of the top ten biggest and most successful companies in the world being on the West Coast of the United States, half of them are in Toronto.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Daniel Wigdor<\/p>\n

Dr. Daniel Wigdor is an entrepreneur and computer science professor at the University of Toronto who has worked at global tech giants like Microsoft and Meta. He has had a front-row seat to the issues stymying Canadian innovation, both cultural and structural, which we talk about on this episode.<\/p>\n

He also has a proposed solution, or at least part of one: a new venture studio named AXL<\/a>, which aims to launch 50 AI companies in the next five years<\/a>. Companies that stay in Canada. The new studio has already secured corporate partnerships with Dentons and RSM Canada to build AI-powered innovations in the legal services and tax and accounting spaces, respectively.<\/p>\n

Is one venture studio enough to stop Canada\u2019s AI talent and IP exodus? Probably not, but Wigdor makes a strong case for the value of targeted capital to bridge Canada\u2019s academic-entrepreneur divide. That his human-computer interaction company, Chatham Labs, was acquired by Meta (a relationship that did not end on the best of terms<\/a>) also adds weight to his perspective on the choice facing Canada\u2019s bright minds today: stay at home or be absorbed into the Big Tech mothership.<\/p>\n

\u201cFundamentally, an entrepreneur is someone who isn\u2019t meant to have a boss,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n
