The NFL and the National Football League Players Association released a joint statement<\/a> Sunday revealing there will be an investigation into how the Philadelphia Eagles handled Jalen Hurts’ blood clot situation during and around the team’s Week 5 trip to London to play the Jacksonville Jaguars.<\/p>\n

“The NFL and NFL Players Association are working together to review the matter,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported further on the situation and said, “The communication is underway regarding the investigation that the union called for into how this was handled with Hurts. It’s taking some time, this is a big endeavor, obviously. But the sides have begun the communication to figure out the logistics of how this is going to happen.”<\/p>\n

This comes after the NFLPA released a statement Tuesday calling for a “full investigation” into the situation.<\/p>\n

“The NFLPA is not aware of any NFL investigation into the medical care provided to Jalen Hurts,” the statement said, per ESPN’s Tim McManus<\/a>. “In fact, the league previously informed the union that it did not plan to review the care he received. Before conclusions are drawn about how this situation was handled, there must be a full investigation into what occurred. Determining the facts is essential to ensuring players receive the highest level of care and protection going forward.”<\/p>\n

McManus noted that statement was in response to comments from NFL chief medical officer Allen Sills that said, “The notion that there’s external factors that any of our physicians would put a player in harm’s way\u2014that’s nonsense.”<\/p>\n

Sills also called the Eagles’ treatment of Hurts “very conservative, very patient-focused and appropriately guarded in every step.”<\/p>\n

The Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, released a joint statement as well that said, in part, the quarterback was “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. \u2026 Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.”<\/p>\n

As McManus detailed, the team said an Oct. 10 ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot and that the team’s medical staff and London-based doctors concluded he could safely take the field.<\/p>\n

However, a follow-up ultrasound after he returned to Philadelphia showed the blood clot had moved. He was ruled out for the following game against the Carolina Panthers and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n

ESPN’s Ian Rapoport (h\/t McManus) reported Hurts was able to sleep prior to the Jaguars game after he was in the hospital late into the night.<\/p>\n

The Jaguars ended up winning the game 19-17 with a last-second field goal, and Hurts went 21-of-40 for 220 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.<\/p>\n
