From Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for Mbilli\u2019s WBC super middleweight title. Both men fight for the first time since September of last year on the Canelo vs Terence Crawford show.<\/p>\n
Canelo was the \u201cCanelo\u201d half of that main event, losing a unanimous decision to Crawford. Mbilli appeared in support, putting on a brilliant action fight with Lester Martinez that ended a split draw. Here at BLH, Scott had it even, while Wil had Mbilli winning narrowly. But the general consensus was that neither man deserved to lose, and everyone wanted to see the immediate rematch that was ordered. Of course, boxing fans can\u2019t have anything we want when we actually want it, so Martinez took a different path and Mbilli instead got a 13 month layoff and his first shot at a star-making name. Not a bad consolation, all in all, for Mbilli or for us.<\/p>\n
Mbilli is a big power puncher, never afraid to mix it up even though it\u2019s gotten him rocked in more than one fight. We saw it in the dramatic show against Carlos Gongora that put him on the map for most boxing fans, and the same instincts that make Mbilli such a fun watch also put him at risk even in fights he seems to be winning clearly. He\u2019s yet to lose a fight, but his courage and relentlessness could put him in trouble against Canelo\u2019s proven history of patiently waiting to counter and destroy aggressive sluggers.<\/p>\n
On the other hand\u2026 Mbilli seems to have a bit more in his arsenal than James Kirkland. And Canelo hasn\u2019t stopped anyone in almost five years, since his late 2021 fight against Caleb Plant. Perhaps Mbilli will take advantage of late stage Canelo\u2019s tendency to downshift midway through fights and pounce?<\/p>\n

It merits mentioning that this major sporting event is scheduled to take place in a city that\u2019s been under near daily bombardment by Houthis based in Yemen, including aggressive attacks on the Riyadh airport which most fighters and dignitaries involved will presumably need to use to arrive. Also, that airport only reopened the morning of this article\u2019s publication, after over two weeks of closure due to an attack that killed 13 people and injured more than 300 others. Also also, the Houthis sent at least one other ballistic missile towards the airport the morning it reopened, per the New York Times, which quoted a Houthi spokesman as saying the airport is \u201ca military target\u201d and that the Saudis will \u201cbear responsibility for the consequences\u201d after reopening it. ALSO also also, the arena where this fight will be held, with all the Saudi officials, celebrities, dignitaries, and world famous athletes in attendance on a public schedule and a video live stream going all over the world, is even closer to the Yemeni border than the airport. All that is to say that if you\u2019re not an Ultimate subscriber and plan on paying the $79.99 for a standalone PPV? It might be wise to wait until the absolute last moment to order, given the very real possibility that this show doesn\u2019t go off, for one reason or another.<\/p>\n ON THE UNDERCARD: Three really notable fights: Lindolfo Delgado vs Arthur Biyarslanov for a vacant IBF belt at super lightweight, Jaime Munguia takes on Nikita Zon, and Rafael Espinoza defends his WBO featherweight belt against Ricardo Blandon.
