Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has secured a fourth nonconsecutive term, defeating right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in a run-off<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bolsonaro, however, has called for Sunday\u2019s vote to be annulled over an \u201cunacceptable\u201d two-hour voting extension granted by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin despite both candidates having requested additional voting time.<\/p>\n

The election results have drawn reactions across the world, with left-wing global figures celebrating Lula\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how the world reacted:<\/p>\n

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum<\/p>\n

Sheinbaum congratulated Lula in a post on X. \u201cLong live democracy, the people of Brazil won,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/p>\n

In his congratulatory post, Carney credited Lula with advancing relations between Canada and Brazil.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us seize this opportunity to strengthen them further, together \u2013 to create new promising commercial prospects, protect the environment, and ensure greater prosperity for both our populations,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n

US officials and politicians<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump\u2019s son Donald Trump Jr criticised the result, citing the two-hour voting time extension.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a conservative government in Brazil did this, everyone in the mainstream press in America would lose their minds, but I guess they\u2019re just choosing to be silent because it\u2019s all for the cause,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Progressive Senator Bernie Sanders, meanwhile, congratulated Lula\u2019s \u201cextraordinary re-election victory\u201d, saying the Brazilian president has \u201cstood up\u201d for workers and democracy and will continue to do so for the next four years.<\/p>\n

Congressman Ro Khanna said in a post on X: \u201cPeople all across the world are fighting back against extremism. With Lula in Brazil, they just won. Authoritarian leaders always attack democracy because they stand no chance against the will of their people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Khanna added that Trump \u201cmust respect the results and not undermine Brazil\u2019s elections\u201d.<\/p>\n

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote on X: \u201cThe people united will never be defeated!\u201d<\/p>\n

California Governor Gavin Newsom\u2019s media office released a statement, saying he is \u201cproud to stand with Brazil and partners around the world who share our commitment to defending democracy, protecting our environment, strengthening workers\u2019 rights, and building an economy that works for working families\u201d.<\/p>\n

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel<\/p>\n

Diaz-Canel said Lula\u2019s \u201chistoric\u201d win \u201censures the continuity of the path of peace, sovereignty, and social justice embarked upon by the Brazilian people under your leader\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrazil can count on Cuba in the construction of the unity and integration of our Great Homeland, Latin American and Caribbean,\u201d he wrote in a post on X.<\/p>\n

Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast<\/p>\n

Kast said he spoke on the phone with Lula to congratulate him on his victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cChile and Brazil have a lot of shared future ahead, and we will continue working on an agenda that strengthens relations between our countries in economic integration and the fight against organised crime in the region,\u201d he said on X.<\/p>\n

In a congratulatory post on X, Fujimori reaffirmed Peru\u2019s \u201cwillingness to strengthen our strategic alliance, integration, cooperation and the sustainable development of the Amazon that we share\u201d with Brazil.<\/p>\n

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz<\/p>\n

\u201cBolivia and Brazil are neighbouring and sister countries, united by a shared history and common challenges,\u201d Rodrigo wrote on X.<\/p>\n

The two countries will continue to work together to strengthen ties and \u201cgenerate more opportunities for our nations\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino<\/p>\n

\u201cI congratulate the \u200c\u200c\u200c\u200cBrazilian \u200c\u200c\u200c\u200cpeople for this democratic day and especially President Lula for the victory!\u201d Mulino wrote on X. \u201cWe will continue working together for our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen<\/p>\n

Von der Leyen congratulated Lula on X, proclaiming that democracy and multilateralism \u201chave won\u201d in Brazil.<\/p>\n

\u201cEurope\u2019s partnership with Brazil is thriving. We will remain by your side for the years to come,\u201d she added. \u201cTogether we will keep working closely for free and open trade. A rules-based global order. And strong ambitions for our climate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa<\/p>\n

\u201cOur region has common enemies, shared challenges, and much to gain when we work together,\u201d Noboa wrote on X, congratulating Lula.<\/p>\n

Paraguayan President Santiago Pena<\/p>\n

\u201cI salute the Brazilian people for this great democratic journey,\u201d Pena wrote on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cParaguay and Brazil share a common agenda of integration and development. We will continue working together for the wellbeing of our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi<\/p>\n

Orsi wrote on X that he had just spoken with his \u201cfriend\u201d Lula and congratulated him \u201con the victory and on the democratic celebration that an electoral process represents\u201d.<\/p>\n

Argentina\u2019s former President Cristina Kirchner<\/p>\n
