But we all also have the one jersey that gets pulled out far more than the rest. The go-to that suits most ride days, gets picked over the others more often than not and is the one you’re annoyed to remember isn’t clean. Over the last several months, Mons Royale’s Icon tee and Diversion pants have taken up that role in my closet.

Both are made of Merino wool, entirely or in part, making them more comfortable than the usual synthetic materials across a wider range of temperatures. It is not surprising that, as a New Zealand based company, Mons Royale are specialists in merino. But, through smart design, the Icon and Diversion make the most out of the material’s potential..

Pedals comfortably with knee pads
Mons Royale Diversion Merino Trail Pants

For the Diversion pants, Mons Royale adds nylon to the merino mix, in places, for a bit of toughness on the trail. In fact, these are mostly stretch nylon, including some recycled nylon. That combo makes these easily the most comfortable pants I’ve worn on the bike. They feel light when you’re riding, they don’t have the rigid, plastic feel of most riding pants, and are soft on the skin making them less sweaty. I’ve ridden these through a hot summer and into some unexpected west coast rain storms. While they’re not waterproof by any stretch, they held the damp at bay for a while and, on cool fall days, they’re still as comfortable as they were in hot summer heat.

Comforably fits an obnoxiously large iPhone in the thigh pocket

The most impressive part of the Diverson pants is the fit. They’re easy to pedal in, even with low- to medium-profile knee pads (Akta’s slightly bulkier knee pads fit fine. A hard-shelled more gravity-focused pad was a stretch). The half-elastic cuff had the perfect amount of stretch to get the tapered lower legs over my heels and high arches, a point that has been the downfall of other skinny riding pants. It’s also more comfortable than, say, the full elastic on Rapha’s lightweight trail pants.

The half-elastic cuff made Diversion’s slim fit easier to live with for high-arched folk like myslef that have struggled to tug on other skinny legged pants.

A full compliment of four pockets, two front pockets on the hips and two on the thighs, make the Diverson pants practical. Pockets can be a weird one, ruining otherwise comfortable pants. The people at Mons Royale clearly spend a lot of time pedalling, though, as these were comfortable and easy to access even with a bunch of crap stuffed in. An inner divider in both thigh pockets keep things separated and help smaller items stay in place. They go a long way to making it so you could pull off quick rides without a pack.

Mons Royale offers the Diversion Merino Trail Pants in sizes from S-XL. Its website has a handy fit guide to help you find the right size. That put me in a medium, instead of my usual large, which worked out quite well.

At $250 in Canada, these Kiwi threads aren’t cheap. Then again, I’ve already worn these enough times to justify that cost and they’re barely showing any sign of the abuse.

It’s a t-shirt, but merino.
Mons Royale Icon Merino T-Shirt

The Diversion pants are an example of how good design, and good pocket placement in particular, can elevate a pair of pants. The Icon Merino is a reminder that things don’t have to be crazy to be good. With a simple shape the Icon mostly lets the Merino do the talking. With 27 colour and pattern options (new and sale designs), the Icon can talk as quietly or loudly as you’d like.

The Icon is 83 per cent Merino Air-Con with a hint of polyester and elastene thrown in. Again, this feels softer than the standard polyster jersey material. That’s true both when wet and dry. It takes longer to sweat through and feel wet than polyester does. It dried faster on days when I was a heavy sweater.

You can sweat through an Icon, but it’ll take a bit longer. And it will dry faster.

One of the promises that merino makes as a (natural) super fabric is odor control. I definitely put that to the test. I reached for the Icon multiple days in a row before conceeding that it needed to be washed. Unlike polyester jerseys, that seem to have a magical ability to store and project stench, even after being washed, the Icon did an admirable job of forgetting any smell imprinted on it from yesterday’s ride so it was fresh enough to wear a second or third day in a row.

Mons Royale offers the Icon in, as mentioned, a staggering array of colours and designs beyond the “dried sage” option shown here. Including sale options, it runs from $88-110.

Anyone who has mountain biked for long enough probably has at least a couple jerseys in the closet…

[445
49,48,635,324278,1700,35620,208,82
post-947398","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cycling","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-cycling","tag-mons-royale","tag-mtb-features","tag-mtb-gear","tag-review","tag-sports
["GET
