About Boxing. “This is the type of guy that in his best days he would completely pick apart and probably just do damage to for 12 rounds or maybe stop him. But the reality is Canelo hasn’t had a stoppage in a long time.”

Rafael pointed to Canelo’s defeat against Terence Crawford alongside his decisions over Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga as clear proof of decline. Alvarez turned pro at 15, and more than two decades in the ring have built up heavy wear and tear.

Canelo hasn’t stopped an opponent since halting Caleb Plant in 2021. While he has managed to keep winning most nights, the emphatic dominance that fueled his run to the top of the sport has largely vanished.

When a fighter has one flat performance, people call it an off night. When it stretches across four straight outings as we’ve seen with Canelo in his last four fights, it is an unmistakable pattern. The public senses it, which explains why the energy around this Riyadh card feels muted.

Mbilli’s relentless work rate presents a serious operational hurdle. Canelo can still punish mistakes off the back foot, and Mbilli’s aggression will present openings. Yet it remains uncertain whether Alvarez can match that output and maintain his gas tank across 36 minutes against a hungry titleholder.

Surviving Mbilli is step one. An emphatic showing keeps Canelo primed for another lucrative main event. Turki Alalshikh could look toward Hamzah Sheeraz next, a fight Alvarez could handle comfortably. It seems doubtful anyone will push him into the ring with a destructive puncher like Osleys Iglesias anytime soon.

A disputed decision on the cards might protect Canelo’s status contractually, but it would hammer his standing with fans. If observers feel Mbilli got robbed, friendly judges will not quiet Rafael’s warnings about the veteran’s fading reflexes.

Mbilli also carries pressure into the ring, looking to rebound after battling Lester Martinez to a draw on the Canelo Crawford undercard. Both enter this meeting off identical layoffs.

Rafael declined to pick the outright upset. Still, he expects Saturday to deliver a clear verdict: Canelo either proves he still belongs at elite championship caliber, or the final bell on his career draws noticeably closer.
