And in Caledon, Christina Early will become the next mayor, CBC projects

Tedjo secured 74,479 votes, or 39.2 per cent, ahead of Parrish with 51,853 votes (27.3 per cent) and Crombie with 43,191 (22.7 per cent).

“It is beyond a doubt the honour of a lifetime to stand here as your next mayor of the city of Mississauga. This is a tremendous responsibility that I do not take lightly,” Tedjo said in his victory speech.

When Hazel McCallion became mayor of Mississauga in 1978, Tedjo wasn’t even born.

Now 43, Tedjo is just the fourth person to hold the job in nearly half a century, marking a significant generational shift in a city long led by political veterans. McCallion served for 36 years before being succeeded by Bonnie Crombie, who held the position for nearly a decade, followed by Parrish, a former MP and longtime city councillor.

Parrish wished the city’s new mayor-elect the best of luck and offered her support whenever he needed advice.

“He’s going to have a tough job ahead of him and he can pick up the phone and call me anytime, and I’ll tell him what not to do,” Parrish said in her concession speech.

Supporters gather around Mississauga’s new mayor-elect, Alvin Tedjo, after the city councillors beat incumbents Bonnie Crombie and Carolyn Parrish to lead city hall. (Jyoti Sharma/CBC)

For Crombie, the loss marked an unsuccessful bid to return to the job she held for nearly a decade before leaving to lead the Ontario Liberal Party. She returned to municipal politics this year hoping to reclaim the mayor’s office, but instead found herself delivering a concession speech.

“I have spoken about perseverance throughout this campaign, and tonight those words are harder to say,” Crombie said after the results. “But they matter just as much. When you get knocked down, you get back up again.”

Tedjo, the Ward 2 councillor since 2022, was making his second bid for Mississauga’s top job. He finished second to Parrish in the 2024 mayoral byelection, securing 25 per cent of the vote compared with the latter’s 31 per cent.

He also made significant gains over the course of this campaign. An August poll by Liaison Strategies placed Tedjo a distant fourth, with just 12 per cent support among decided and leaning voters, compared with 35 per cent each for Parrish and Crombie. By Oct. 22, he had climbed to 31 per cent, ahead of Parrish at 28 per cent and just behind Crombie at 35 per cent.

“When we started this six months ago, we knew it was going to be tough. People told us we couldn’t win and that we should sit it out,” Tedjo said. “I wanted to fight for this city.”

3rd term for Brown

Brown won a third consecutive term as Brampton’s mayor, securing 65,893 votes, or 54.9 per cent, and defeating 11 challengers, according to the city’s unofficial results page. His closest rival, Wesley Jackson, finished a distant second with 23,236 votes, or 19.36 per cent.

Brown, a former leader of Ontario’s Progressive Conservative Party who was first elected mayor in 2018, campaigned on continuing what he calls the “Big Brampton Build,” pointing to major projects including the city’s second hospital and a planned tunnelled LRT extension into downtown Brampton.

In a written response to CBC News last week, he said he was running to “keep the momentum” going and deliver the infrastructure needed for the growing city.

Early to win Caledon race, CBC projects

In Caledon, Early will be the next mayor, CBC News projects, succeeding Annette Groves after an election shaped by competing views on how the town should manage rapid development.

Early, who has served on Caledon council since 2018, was among five candidates seeking the mayor’s job. The race saw her go up against fellow regional Coun. Mario Russo, with whom she has disagreed over major land-use decisions.

Among the first orders of business awaiting Caledon’s new mayor is dealing with the ongoing illegal trucking activities in the town. Residents have long been complaining about unofficial truck yards popping up on vacant farmland in Caledon, with trucks using the space for storage, parking and resting spots without the appropriate zoning and approval from the municipality.

As a result, Caledon residents said they have been faced with noise, congestion on the roads, safety hazards and land-use violations.

In her campaign, Early has promised she will not allow the status quo to continue. Noting, provincial restrictions on how far municipalities can go to punish truck yard operators, she vowed to advocate to the province for stronger legislation

“If you’re going to open up an illegal truck yard, we’ve got to find a way to stick a … barrier in front of it. You can’t just keep on putting trucks in a field and expecting us to turn a blind eye,” Early told CBC Peel during her campaign.

All polls were extended for two hours and closed at 10 p.m. after town officials reported they ran out of some ballots at two locations.

Alvin Tedjo has been elected mayor of Mississauga, defeating incumbent Carolyn Parrish and former mayor Bonnie Crombie in…

[194339
51759,49,48
post-948000","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brampton","tag-brampton","tag-ca","tag-canada
["GET
