More than two-thirds of Israeli voters have cast their ballots<\/a> in Israel\u2019s consequential legislative election, according to the country\u2019s Central Elections Committee, exceeding the total number of votes cast in the last election.<\/p>\n

The commission said at least 77.7 percent of eligible voters \u2013 or more than 5.69 million of about 7.33 million voters \u2013 turned out to cast their ballots in Tuesday\u2019s election.<\/p>\n

The figure is about 7.1 percentage points higher than the 70.63 percent recorded in the previous election in 2022, and the highest turnout in a Knesset election since 1999, when 78.7 percent of eligible voters participated.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s Channel 12 also reported that voter turnout among the Arab community inside Israel reached about 80 percent, five percentage points higher than the 1999 record.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Israel\u2019s military said turnout among soldiers had climbed beyond 68 percent by 5pm (15:00 GMT) \u2013 higher than the 65 percent tracked at the same stage of the 2022 election.<\/p>\n

Polling stations closed at 10pm local time (20:00 GMT), but the Central Elections Committee said anyone still waiting in line at that time could vote. This came as local media reports say the committee rejected a request by Likud to extend voting hours beyond 10pm.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has issued an 11th-hour appeal for right-wing voters to cast their ballots, saying that turnout \u201cin the Arab sector is unprecedented\u201d and that a \u201cdangerous left-wing government\u201d could take power.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not despair! It is still possible to win,\u201d Smotrich said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

Prominent politicians from Arab-led lists have accused right-wing figures<\/a> of incitement against Palestinian citizens, who make up 20 percent of Israel\u2019s population, and of questioning their legitimacy to vote.<\/p>\n

Near-record turnout<\/p>\n

Mitchell Barak, a pollster and former aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, earlier told Al Jazeera that voter turnout \u201cis really high and that\u2019s good\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think \u2026 it will probably pass its historic peak in \u201973 \u2013 when Israel was also involved in a huge war \u2013 so draw what conclusion from that you will,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The election is largely seen as a referendum on Netanyahu\u2019s handling of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks and the wars that followed, the most intense period of combat for Israel since the 1973 surprise military campaign by Egypt and Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose numbers are going to help the incumbent parties,\u201d Barak said, \u201cas the 3.25 percent threshold a party needs to get into the Knesset remains, the number of votes you need to meet that threshold increases dramatically.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israeli officials noted that several polling stations faced exceptionally long lines, attributed to high voter turnout despite rainy and blustery weather in parts of the country, and a flood warning in some areas.<\/p>\n

In a message more than five hours after polls opened, Netanyahu urged supporters to vote, saying turnout was high among his opponents on the left and among Palestinian citizens of Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need it to be high too. You all need to stream to the polls,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a fateful moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netanyahu had repeatedly warned supporters of the prospect of high turnout among Palestinian citizens in Israel ahead of the vote, seeking to mobilise his base under the slogan \u201cthe right or Palestine\u201d.<\/p>\n

Those voters were casting ballots in \u201cunprecedented\u201d numbers, Palestinian candidate Ahmad Tibi said.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu and his main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, have ruled out partnering with Arab parties, citing a lack of shared values, although some possible scenarios envision them propping up a minority government to ensure Netanyahu is removed from office.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, an Israeli rights group has filed a complaint with the country\u2019s election committee warning that widespread delays could be suppressing the vote among Palestinian citizens of Israel.<\/p>\n

Although delays could reflect high voter turnout, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) said in its complaint to the Central Elections Committee that delays had been reported in at least 18 communities. It asked the committee to investigate \u201cwhether these delays are deliberate\u201d.<\/p>\n
