Teams were set up by Bill Stewart, our golf professional, based on the handicaps of the players to ensure equitable teams, and as Bill said during the prize presentation, “there was some pretty good golf played today and there was some pretty bad golf played today.”

 Southampton Cup

The Southampton Cup has been the final event of the golf season for the past several years. Previous winners of the Cup include Team Urstadt in 2023 and Team Lazenby in 2022 and in 2024. There was no Cup event last year and this year, team captains Martin and Lazenby recruited players to fill out their teams back in June. Each week, the two teams competed against each other to earn a point which would count at the final two-day event. The Southampton Cup features year end play similar to the Ryder Cup format. The first day of play would feature a two-man net best ball match and the second day would be all single matches. Again, the Team Captains met before the first day of play to set up the players and matches for the two-man net best ball event and again after day one play was completed to set up the singles matches the next day.

On Day 1, Team Lazenby won two matches as follows: Team Urstadt and Hewison defeated Team Towner and Crossett 1 up and Team Borland and Lazenby defeated Team Shields and O’Donohue 2 up. Team Martin took four matches on Day 1: Team Todorov & O’Rourke defeated Team James and Wisniewski 4 up with 3 to play, Team Agla and Bezaire won over Team Silenzi and Moore 2 up. Team Martin and Wright defeated Team Pitzen and Ezechiels 4 up with 3 to play and Chris Page won over Dave McFarlane in a singles match 1 up. Going into day two of play, Team Martin was in the lead 4 matches to 2 for Team Lazenby.

There were 11 singles matches played on the second day of play and Team Martin players were tough to beat. Great effort was put up by members of Team Lazenby but at the end of the day, Team Martin won nine of the matches and was declared winner of the Southampton Cup for 2026.

Results of the matches on the second day of play were as follows: Todorov won over Silenzi 5 & 3; Towner defeated Urstadt 2 up, Agla defeated Jaes 3 & 2; Page won over Morrison 5 & 4; Martin defeated Borland 5 & 4; Wright defeated Ezechiels 3 & 2; O’Rourke won over Wisniewski 1 up; Crossett defeated Moore 4 & 3; Shields won over McFarlane 5 & 3; Pitzen won over Dirstein 3 & 2 and Hewison won over Lemire 4 & 3.
