{"id":9513,"date":"2025-07-20T02:53:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T02:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/9513\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T02:53:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T02:53:21","slug":"doctor-says-2-kiwis-a-day-can-help-improve-gut-health-and-fight-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/9513\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctor says 2 kiwis a day can help improve gut health and fight disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Eating two of a specific type of fruit each day may keep the gastroenterologist away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Dr. Trisha Pasricha, a gastroenterologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, &#8220;prescribes&#8221; two kiwis a day to her patients to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/digestive-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">help with digestion<\/a> and deliver a boost of vitamins and antioxidants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hesitate to say there&#8217;s any one magic fruit out there that will cure all your gut health woes, but in some respects, kiwis do seem to rise above some of the other tried-and-true methods out there, like prunes or psyllium fiber,&#8221; Pasricha told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/eating-common-foods-before-bed-could-trigger-sweet-dreams-night-terrors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">EATING THESE COMMON FOODS BEFORE BED COULD TRIGGER SWEET DREAMS OR NIGHT TERRORS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A single kiwi packs up to eight grams of fiber, which prevents constipation and promotes regular bowel movements, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/healthy-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the superfood<\/a> also contains actinidin, an enzyme that helps digestion by breaking down proteins. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Actinidin is so powerful that it&#8217;s used commercially as a meat tenderizer, Pasricha wrote in her &#8220;Ask A Doctor&#8221; column for The Washington Post recently.<\/p>\n<p>Pasricha said she recommends it over other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">high-fiber foods<\/a> such as prunes, which can actually contribute to bloating and are harder to convince people to eat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/breakfast-mistake-makes-people-reach-sugary-snacks-afternoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">THIS BREAKFAST MISTAKE MAKES PEOPLE REACH FOR SUGARY SNACKS IN THE AFTERNOON<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She has seen kiwis work wonders for her patients and her own family, she said, but a 2022 study proved what she and other gastroenterologists have long observed anecdotally.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists from New Zealand, Italy and Japan found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">two kiwis a day<\/a> helped participants have more frequent and complete bowel movements and helped alleviate abdominal pain, indigestion and straining while going to the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/digestive-discomfort.jpg\" alt=\"Woman clutching her stomach, apparently suffering from digestive issues, with supplements seen behind her.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Some high-fiber foods and supplements can leave people feeling bloated \u2014 but kiwis are not in that category, say experts. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fiber helps with digestive issues and constipation, specifically by adding bulk to stool so it can move through the colon easier and also softening stool so it&#8217;s easier to push out,&#8221; New York-based certified holistic nutritionist Robin DeCicco told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>The study found the fruits proved to be more effective than psyllium husk, a supplement Pasricha said has &#8220;long reigned queen in the gastroenterology world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/can-drinking-soda-help-migraines-doctors-reveal-whether-bubbly-drinks-cure-headaches-not\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CAN DRINKING SODA HELP MIGRAINES? DOCTORS REVEAL WHETHER BUBBLY DRINKS CURE HEADACHES OR NOT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, researchers in Norway found in 2011 that kiwi consumption helped prevent DNA breaks that can cause cancerous growths and reduced triglycerides, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tied to heart attack risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A 2023 study done in China also suggested that people who ate more kiwis had a 13% lower risk of colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/older-woman-eating-fruit.jpg\" alt=\"Older woman eating fruit\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Kiwi should be added to a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, experts recommend.
