The rating is the highest available and reflects the city’s financial management, healthy reserves, liquidity and ability to meet its financial obligations.

While a credit rating might seem like an obscure measure of municipal performance, it has a direct impact on how much it costs the city to borrow money. A higher rating generally allows municipalities to secure more favourable interest rates when financing major projects, potentially saving taxpayers money over the long term.

That is particularly important for Brampton, which is dealing with the financial demands of rapid population growth at a time when the economy is facing considerable challenges.

U.S. tariffs and uncertainty surrounding cross-border trade have put pressure on Canadian businesses, including manufacturers and companies with significant supply chains connected to the American market. Brampton has acknowledged those concerns, introducing a 10-point economic resilience plan in September aimed at protecting local jobs, helping businesses adapt and attracting new investment.

The province is also projecting modest economic growth, with Ontario’s real gross domestic product expected to increase by just 0.5 per cent in 2026.

Against that backdrop, maintaining a strong financial position gives Brampton greater flexibility to invest in the roads, transit, infrastructure and public services needed to support its growing population without placing unnecessary pressure on future budgets.

S&P’s assessment also points to Brampton’s relatively low debt burden. The agency’s 2025 comparative figures show the city’s direct debt at 17.4 per cent of operating revenues, compared with a median of 26.2 per cent among AAA-rated Canadian municipalities.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said maintaining the rating for 11 consecutive years reflects the city’s commitment to responsible financial management while continuing to invest in infrastructure and services.

The city’s 2026 budget included no increase to the municipal portion of property taxes, although a separate one per cent levy was approved to support the city’s commitment to a second hospital.

The AAA rating does not mean Brampton is immune to economic pressures, but it does provide an important financial advantage as the city works to manage growth, maintain services and keep borrowing costs under control.

INSAUGA Canada’s Editorial Standards and Policies

Last 30 Days: 51,438 Votes

All Time: 1,600,396 Votes

    1557 VOTES
Are you happy with the election results in your town or city?

Stay in the know.

Subscribe now to receive our daily email of today’s top stories in your city!

Brampton has once again received the highest possible credit rating from an international agency, a financial achievement that…

[194339
51759,49,48
post-952065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brampton","tag-brampton","tag-ca","tag-canada
["GET
