Police watchdog investigators have charged an Ontario Provincial Police officer with assault following an arrest north of Brampton late last year.<\/p>\n
Ontario\u2019s Special Investigations Unit says the incident happened on Dec. 26, 2025, at a residence in Caledon East. But it wasn\u2019t reported to the SIU until Feb. 4, the same day the investigators were notified by the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency.<\/p>\n
The SIU says OPP officers were called for a disturbance outside the home, and a male suspect was arrested for uttering threats.<\/p>\n
But investigators say there was \u201can interaction\u201d with officers while the man was being handcuffed \u201cthat resulted in the man suffering a serious injury.\u201d<\/p>\n
An investigation has led the SIU to charge an OPP officer.<\/p>\n
The SIU says Const. Daniel Kooy has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.<\/p>\n
A more than two-year veteran with the OPP, Kooy joined the Caledon detachment from another service, according to a video posted in 2024 where he appears with OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.<\/p>\n
He made approximately $148,818 in 2025, according to the Ontario sunshine list.<\/p>\n
Friday\u2019s announcement is the second in as many days where charges were laid against an Ontario police officer.<\/p>\n
