Drivers spend three hours hammering the brake pedal, navigating bumper-to-bumper traffic and protecting precious track position around NASCAR’s shortest circuit.

Rick Ware Racing driver Cody Ware perhaps described the challenge best.

“Martinsville is a slugfest from start to finish,” Ware said. “You’re managing contact with the guys around you, and you’re really having to manage the tires.”

That reality is amplified even further this weekend. With just one race remaining after Sunday, every point matters and every mistake carries season-changing consequences.

Larson in Control, But Not Comfortable

No driver enters Martinsville with more momentum than Kyle Larson.

The defending champion turned heads last weekend at Talladega, storming from outside the top-10 on the final lap to score his first career superspeedway victory. The win expanded Larson’s championship lead to 73 points over Denny Hamlin entering the final two races of The Chase.

It is a sizable advantage, but Larson knows better than to relax at Martinsville.

“I still feel a lot of pressure,” Larson said. “It’s so easy for the points to swing. A team or driver can have a great day and score maximum points, and we could have a day like we had at Phoenix and boom, they’re right back in it.”

The good news for Larson is his history at Martinsville. The Hendrick Motorsports star owns a victory at the track, has finished inside the top 10 in eight straight Martinsville races and boasts one of the best average finishes among drivers in the Next Gen era.

Another strong performance Sunday could allow him to leave Virginia with one hand firmly on a third Cup Series championship trophy.

Hamlin’s Home-State Opportunity

If anyone is capable of making up ground quickly at Martinsville, it is Denny Hamlin.

The Chesterfield, Virginia native has long been considered the modern master of Martinsville Speedway. Hamlin leads all active drivers with six victories, 22 top-five finishes, 28 top-10s and more than 3,000 laps led at the track.

He dominated here as recently as 2025 and finished second in this spring’s race after winning both stages.

Now he returns needing a statement performance.

Hamlin trails Larson by 73 points entering the weekend, meaning a seventh Martinsville grandfather clock could dramatically tighten the championship fight before Homestead.

Bell and Briscoe Still Lurking

Joe Gibbs Racing arrives at Martinsville with multiple drivers still mathematically involved in the championship battle.

Christopher Bell sits third in the standings, 74 points behind Larson, while Chase Briscoe is fourth and 79 points back.

Bell already owns one of the most memorable Martinsville victories of the modern era, winning the fall 2022 race to secure a Championship 4 berth. Meanwhile, Briscoe has quietly become one of the track’s most consistent performers, recording six top-10 finishes in the last nine Martinsville races.

Neither driver can afford an off day Sunday.

Martinsville Masters Ready to Pounce

While the championship storyline will dominate the headlines, several non-title contenders have every reason to believe they can spoil the party.

William Byron enters as the defending winner of the fall race and owns an impressive three Martinsville victories. Chase Elliott captured the spring race earlier this season and has posted top-five finishes in each of the last five Martinsville events.

Ross Chastain, famous for the “Hail Melon” move that propelled him into the Championship 4 in 2022, once again returns to one of his strongest racetracks.

Ryan Blaney may be the most dangerous driver in the field. The 2023 champion has won two of the last three fall Martinsville races and owns an incredible streak of 15 consecutive finishes of 11th or better at the Virginia oval. Sitting more than 100 points out of the championship lead, Blaney likely needs a victory to remain in contention.

Joey Logano finds himself in a similar position. The Team Penske driver enters the weekend riding a streak of 14 consecutive Martinsville top-10 finishes and knows a win may be his only realistic path back into the title conversation.

A Track That Demands Respect

Martinsville’s formula has barely changed since opening in 1947, yet it continues to challenge generations of drivers.

The flat corners and long straightaways force competitors to brake harder than almost anywhere else on the schedule. Over 500 laps, drivers will repeatedly apply hundreds of pounds of brake pressure while fighting for inches of racetrack.

“It’s a wrestling match,” Ware said. “But it’s also about precision and consistency and mitigating as many mistakes as you can throughout a run.”

Those who manage the physical and mental demands best typically leave with the famous grandfather clock.

Those who don’t often leave frustrated, damaged or eliminated.

What to Watch Sunday

Can Larson all but clinch the championship?
A strong finish could make the Homestead finale little more than a formality.

Will Hamlin capitalize on his best remaining opportunity?
Few drivers have been better at Martinsville than the Virginia native.

Can Blaney or Logano keep their title hopes alive?
Both Ford stars likely need a victory to remain serious championship threats.

Will Hendrick Motorsports dominate again?
Elliott, Byron and Larson have combined to win five of the last nine Martinsville races.

Who survives the chaos?
Martinsville has always produced bumpers, bruised feelings and dramatic late-race moments. With a championship hanging in the balance, Sunday’s race figures to offer plenty more.

The green flag for the Xfinity 500 is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET Sunday, airing on NBC, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

RIDGEWAY, Va. — After 34 races, nearly 10,000 laps and eight grueling Chase events, the NASCAR Cup Series…

[446
49,48,634,82
post-953436","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nascar","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-nascar","tag-sports
["GET
