Martha Stewart is \u201cvery sorry\u201d for dressing up as a homeless person <\/a>for Halloween.<\/p>\n

The lifestyle guru, 85, apologized Sunday, stating that the shocking getup was \u201cinsensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cit\u2019s hard to admit when you\u2019ve really screwed up. My earlier statement<\/a> didn\u2019t go far enough,\u201d she wrote on Instagram.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI know many people are suffering economically,\u201d she continued. \u201cWearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an Instagram post, she said her costume \u2014 which she quickly deleted after posting \u2014 was \u201cinsensitive and not funny.\u201d Instagram\/marthastewart48<\/p>\n

She concluded, \u201cI am very sorry. Martha.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reactions to the apology written on the Notes app on her phone were mixed.<\/p>\n

One critic commented, \u201cYour choice reflects an utter disconnect from the desperation and suffering of so many people, especially those who are unhoused and hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

But one fan defended her, noting, \u201cWe always dressed as \u2018Hobo\u2019s\u2019 for Halloween in the 1970\u2019s. It was no big deal. Get over it people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stewart faced intense backlash after she shared \u2014 and quickly deleted \u2014 a photo of herself wearing a beanie and tattered clothing while holding a sign begging for food. She also smeared dirt across her face,<\/p>\n

The multimillionaire businesswoman captioned the post, \u201cMy QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Stewart told Page Six in a statement that her costume was intended to bring \u201cawareness\u201d to the issue of homelessness.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n

\u201cHomelessness continues to remain one of America\u2019s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Stewart has not been shy about talking about her money.<\/p>\n

In a statement to Page Six before her apology, she said she was actually bringing awareness to the issue of homelessness. WireImage<\/p>\n

Last month, she shockingly shared that she once raked in $65 million a year<\/a> from Kmart royalties alone during her appearance on the \u201cOther People\u2019s Business\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were selling close to $2 billion worth of merchandise,\u201d she recalled to MasterClass CEO David Rogier. \u201cThat\u2019s a lot of money. That was funding the whole development of my magazine, the whole business. That was an amazing thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she doesn\u2019t live lavishly as she admitted she also \u201clost about a billion dollars\u201d navigating her legal problems in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

Stewart was famously convicted in an insider trading scandal and served five months in prison<\/a>, five more in home confinement and two years of supervised probation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lawyers took me to the cleaners,\u201d Stewart explained, but noted, \u201cI\u2019m back. I\u2019m pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n
