The churches plan to reuse the poppies for displays in future years.

The knitted and crocheted flowers are attached to stems and embedded in ground beside the churches.

Ros Davison estimates she crocheted about 50 poppies, taking her wool on holiday and assembling them on the plane.

“It’s visual and you know the whole community can see it, and know that they’ve been a part of it,” she said.

Jenny Shaw and her friends knitted more than 100 poppies combined, she said, despite her being “not really a knitter”.

She said: “I always thought that my poppies would not look particularly fantastic but actually they’re fine.”

Dan Shaw, on the churches’ committee, said the poppies were “a blend of doing something new with something that’s been around for over 100 years”.

“I think it’s brilliant. It’s surprising if you ask your local community to do something, how it all just comes together and people do it.”
