The champion was comfortably ahead when the ringside doctor intervened on Saturday’s Canelo Alvarez–Christian Mbilli undercard in Riyadh.

Blandón accepted the opportunity on roughly a week’s notice after mandatory challenger Lorenzo Parra was ruled out. He faced a difficult task against Espinoza, and the opening rounds offered little indication that he could overcome the difference in technique. The Mexican established his jab, applied pressure, and made the replacement challenger work to get within punching distance.

Espinoza’s length gave him control of the approach. Blandón needed to get past the jab before he could make his own power useful, but he struggled to do that consistently. The champion could initiate the action from farther out, leaving the Nicaraguan trying to close ground while dealing with incoming punches.

That combination of reach and pressure made Espinoza difficult to dislodge. He did not have to surrender the initiative to use his physical advantages, and Blandón never established enough offense to make him reconsider his approach. For the brief time they fought, the champion dictated the terms.

The cut became the decisive factor in the third round. Its severity prompted the doctor to stop the contest, producing a TKO rather than allowing the scheduled twelve-round bout to continue. This was a medical ending, with the condition of Blandón’s eye determining the finish rather than a knockdown or a referee intervention during an unanswered attack.

That distinction matters when judging the performance. Espinoza was winning clearly, but the fight ended before he could demonstrate how thoroughly he might break down the challenger. The result rewarded his early control without providing the more complete finish that his pressure appeared capable of producing.

For Blandón, the short preparation and sudden ending made this a frustrating world-title opportunity. He arrived with four consecutive victories and respectable punching power, but neither translated into sustained success against the champion. Once the cut became too serious, there was no opportunity to attempt a recovery over the remaining rounds.

Espinoza had been out of action since stopping Arnold Khegai in November 2025. Returning with a successful defense keeps his championship run moving, although fewer than three completed rounds offered limited work after that absence. Blandón could not extend him enough to reveal much about his longer-distance sharpness.

The original opponent change also reduced what Espinoza could gain from the night. Beating a replacement challenger was necessary to protect his position, but it was unlikely to carry the significance of a successful mandatory defense against Parra. The abrupt medical stoppage narrowed that opportunity further.

Espinoza remains a difficult proposition at featherweight because his unusual height comes with an attacking style that prevents opponents from simply waiting outside. Blandón experienced that difficulty immediately. The champion kept his belt with little trouble, but a stronger opponent and a fuller contest are needed to give his next defense greater substance.

Having a world champion like Espinoza share the ring with a replacement drafted on seven days notice made for grim viewing. You could tell within ninety seconds Blandon had neither the footwork nor the size to deal with a six foot one featherweight, let alone mount meaningful offense.

Blandon was essentially a sacrifice brought in to salvage television time once Lorenzo Parra fell out. When the doctor stepped in to halt it over that eye cut, it almost felt like an act of mercy rather than a dramatic championship conclusion. Nobody gained anything from it. Espinoza gets a three round workout that told us nothing new, Blandon collects a paycheck after taking punishment, and the audience gets robbed of a genuine title contest.

Rafael Espinoza (29-0, 25 KOs) retained his WBO featherweight title with a third-round TKO over Ricardo Blandón (21-7,…

[447
703,49,48,82
post-955492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-boxing","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-sports
["GET
