Only adults aged 18 and over may obtain fireworks from licensed retailers, and only during the 10 days leading up to an approved holiday—not on the holiday itself.

They remain strictly prohibited on all public property, including city parks, streets, sidewalks, and boulevards, as well as private property without written permission from the owner.

New This Year: Know What’s Permitted

Roman candles are newly prohibited under the City of Mississauga’s regulations this year. There are safer, lower-impact alternatives that create a bright, festive atmosphere with less noise and waste, such as glow sticks, glow wands and LED lights. These options can help create a colourful celebration while being more considerate of pets, wildlife and neighbours.

Safety Protocols and disposal

A safe celebration starts with knowing the guidelines. Always follow product instructions and ensure any permitted activities take place outdoors in a clear, open area on private property, away from homes, trees and flammable materials.

A water source, such as a bucket or hose, must be immediately accessible at all times, and children must be closely supervised from a safe viewing distance.

Once the celebration is over, residents are required to follow local guidelines and thoroughly clean up the entire area. Used and unused items should be disposed of by fully submerging them in water to soak overnight before placing them in the garbage.

Celebrate safely from start to finish.

Where to report complaints

Firework-related complaints can be made to the City of Mississauga or to police, depending on the nature of the complaint. For any emergencies, call 911.

General complaints regarding private property, residential roads, or illegal sales can be made by calling 311 or via the City’s online reporting tool.

Issues taking place in city parks or on school property should be reported to the Facility Watch Program at 905-615-4060, while unsafe firework activity or violations on major roadways should be directed to Peel Regional Police at 905-453-3311.

Non-emergency fire safety inquiries can be handled directly by Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services at 905-456-5700.

INSAUGA Canada’s Editorial Standards and Policies

With Diwali approaching, it’s important to celebrate safely and responsibly.
