Canelo Alvarez’s return should have tested Christian Mbilli’s patience, not the patience of everyone paying to watch. Saturday’s DAZN pay-per-view repeatedly lost momentum between fights, turning an evening of boxing into a test of how much studio conversation viewers would tolerate before the next bell.

Early finishes can leave broadcasters with time to fill. That comes with the sport. But paying customers should not have to wonder whether another fight is approaching or whether they have time to leave the house.

Eric Raskin’s BoxingScene running diary documents the drag. The main broadcast began at 1:45 p.m. ET, yet the first ringwalks did not start until 2:18. Later, Rafael Espinoza’s stoppage of Ricardo Blandon was followed by approximately 67 minutes before Jaime Munguia and Nikita Zon began their entrances. www.boxingscene.com

Those gaps make it harder for the fighters to hold an audience. A quick finish should generate excitement about what comes next. Instead, viewers were returned to a studio discussion while the energy from the previous bout drained away.

Raskin also cited reports that the lengthy wait before Munguia-Zon involved holding the action for Turki Alalshikh’s arrival. That explanation was not independently established in his account. The delay itself, however, needed no speculation from anyone sitting through it. www.boxingscene.com

A broadcast needs analysis, interviews, and enough flexibility to accommodate unexpected endings. It also needs someone willing to keep the show moving. There is only so much a panel can say before discussion becomes an obstacle between customers and the product they purchased.

The frustration is that competitive boxing was available. Munguia-Zon delivered action once it finally started, but viewers had already spent an extended stretch waiting for it.

Promoters ask fans to commit their cash and their evening. Keeping those fans engaged requires more than assembling a card and switching on the cameras. The time between fights is part of the purchase, too, and Saturday offered far too much of it.
