{"id":956146,"date":"2026-11-03T01:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-11-03T01:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/956146\/"},"modified":"2026-11-03T01:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-11-03T01:12:10","slug":"thats-the-death-date-amherstview-woman-remains-in-disbelief-following-her-omas-death-by-maid-at-long-term-care-home-in-belleville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/956146\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;That\u2019s the death date&#8217;: Amherstview woman remains in disbelief following her Oma&#8217;s death by MAID at long-term care home in Belleville"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Amherstview woman has filed a report with <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevilleps.ca\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bellevilleps.ca\/\">Belleville Police <\/a>and the Coroner\u2019s office after her grandmother\u2019s life was taken using <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-services-benefits\/medical-assistance-dying.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-services-benefits\/medical-assistance-dying.html\">Medical Assistance in Dying<\/a> (MAID), a process during which a physician or nurse practitioner either administers a substance that causes death directly or prescribes\/provides a substance for the patient to self-administer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brigitte Kranendonk claims her 83-year-old grandmother, Brigitte Stegemann, did not have the mental capacity to give proper consent for MAID while living at The Pearl long-term care home in Belleville, a place she had resided for the past two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stegemann was administered MAID and passed away on July 10.
