The new Hometown Remix uniform, unveiled Monday, swaps the blue for black, warning orange and storm grey.

On the right shoulder is a logo longtime fans haven’t seen on an Oilers jersey in almost 20 years: the oil rig worker.

“Orange and storm grey set off the black jersey, with the return of the oil rig worker,” the team posted. “This is Oil Country.”

The Oilers will wear it seven times this season, starting Thursday, Nov. 5, against the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Place. It’s already for sale, and it isn’t cheap: $239.99 for the blank Premium version.

What the new Oilers black jersey looks like

Black is the first thing you notice. The details take longer:

The crest: the classic Oilers logo, recoloured in black, orange and grey, with no blue.

The stripes: two bright orange bands across the arms and waist, edged in grey.

The left shoulder: the “Oil Country” patch from last season’s alternate jersey.

The right shoulder: the oil rig worker.

The hem: “This is Oil Country,” stitched between warning bars like hazard tape on a job site.

The numbers: a jagged font outlined in orange and grey.

The rest of the uniform: black pants with the recoloured crest, striped socks, and, for the first time, matte black helmets. Connor McDavid modelled the full kit in the team’s reveal video.

Ice District Authentics calls it a “slick, black, oil aesthetic” that represents “the grit and determination Edmonton is built on.”

The oil rig worker is back after nearly 20 years

For fans who grew up with the Oilers of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the shoulder patch is the headline.

The oil rig worker arrived with the team’s 1996-97 redesign, when the Oilers moved to darker blue, copper and red. The logo shows a worker pulling a lever shaped like a hockey stick. It stayed part of the team’s look through the 2006-07 season.

That’s the Doug Weight and Ryan Smyth era. It also covers the 2006 run to the Stanley Cup Final, which ended in a Game 7 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

For younger fans, it’s a cool patch. For anyone who remembers Smyth’s mullet and the blue-collar Oilers of the early 2000s, it’s a piece of the team’s history back on the ice.

Why the Oilers call it a night-shift jersey

The team is marketing the uniform with a campaign called “Welcome to Midnight City,” and the tagline “Built for the night shift.”

The idea is Edmonton after dark: the plant operators, oilfield crews and shift workers who keep the city running while everyone else sleeps. Before the reveal, the team teased the jersey with a coded message that decoded to “Oil Country After Midnight.”

Black base, warning orange and hazard-tape striping. Everything about the design points to that theme.

Reaction is mixed

Fans got an early look on Oct. 27, when images of the design leaked online. Reaction since Monday’s reveal has been split, which is normal for any new Oilers jersey. Some fans love the industrial look. Others want the blue back.

One practical question has come up: whether black numbers outlined in orange will be easy to read from the upper bowl, or on TV.

How much does the new Oilers jersey cost?

The blank Fanatics Premium Hometown Remix jersey is $239.99 at Ice District Authentics, plus tax and shipping, in sizes 2XS to 3XL. Player versions are also listed.

There’s also an Authentic Pro version built to match what the players wear on the ice. It’s sold separately and usually costs more.

The collection went on sale Monday at:

Ice District Authentics, online and in store

NHLShop.ca and NHLShop.com

Fanatics.com

Oilers team stores

There’s also a full line of hoodies, T-shirts, hats, fleece and a black half-zip jacket.

All 7 games the Oilers will wear the black jersey

Every game is at Rogers Place, and every one falls on a Thursday:

DateOpponentThursday, Nov. 5, 2026Anaheim DucksThursday, Dec. 3, 2026Washington CapitalsThursday, Dec. 17, 2026Dallas StarsThursday, Jan. 7, 2027Florida PanthersThursday, Jan. 28, 2027New Jersey DevilsThursday, March 11, 2027Nashville PredatorsThursday, March 18, 2027St. Louis BluesCalgary went gold, and Anaheim gets to see both

The Flames unveiled their Hometown Remix jersey Monday too, and went the opposite way.

Calgary’s design is gold-heavy, a tribute to the Scotiabank Saddledome in its final season, with details inspired by the building’s famous saddle-shaped roof. “One last ride” runs along the hem. The Flames say they’ll wear it nine times, starting Friday, Nov. 6.

Their opponent that night: the Anaheim Ducks.

So the Ducks will see Edmonton’s new black jersey on Thursday and Calgary’s new gold one on Friday. They’re the first team to face both.

Black in Edmonton. Gold in Calgary. Battle of Alberta fans will spend the week arguing about which one is better.

Every NHL team is getting one

Hometown Remix is a league-wide program. The NHL and Fanatics say they spent two years designing a jersey for each of the 32 teams, each built around something local: a landmark, an old logo, a piece of the city’s identity.

Some teams went with architecture. Calgary went with its arena. Edmonton went with the industry the city was built on, and the team’s nickname has always pointed there anyway.

Will a black jersey help fill Rogers Place?

The jersey arrives in a season when the crowds at Rogers Place have been their own storyline.

The arena holds 18,347 for hockey. Several weeknight games this season have come in more than 1,300 short, including the first Battle of Alberta, which drew an announced 17,032. The team has rolled out $10 food deals and cheaper parking, but ticket prices haven’t changed.

The Oilers come home Thursday after seven straight road wins. The black jersey debuts on a weeknight against a non-rival, exactly the kind of game that’s been hard to sell this fall.

A new jersey won’t change ticket prices. But seven Thursday nights with a look fans have never seen before give people a reason to pick those dates.

We’ll be watching the crowd.

Read more: Edmonton Oilers’ Empty Seats Persist, Even as Battle of Alberta Sees McDavid Break NHL Record

Read more: Edmonton Oilers Offer $10 Food Deals and Cheaper Parking at Rogers Place as Empty Seats Persist

Sources

The Edmonton Oilers are going black.
