Canadian dairy farmers will receive a higher price for their milk beginning next year after the Canadian Dairy Commission approved a 2.8 per cent increase to the national farmgate milk price.<\/p>\n
The adjustment takes effect February 1, 2027, pending final approval from provincial authorities. The change amounts to an increase of $0.0259 per litre, or just under three cents per litre of milk paid to producers.<\/p>\n
The decision follows the Commission’s annual review of farmgate milk pricing and consultations with industry stakeholders.<\/p>\n
Jennifer Hayes, chair of the Canadian Dairy Commission, said the board chose a measured approach that reflects inflation while helping producers manage continued cost pressures.<\/p>\n
She noted dairy farmers continue to face rising expenses and economic uncertainty despite ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and productivity on their farms.<\/p>\n
Increase below pricing formula recommendation<\/p>\n
The Commission’s National Pricing Formula indicated farmgate milk prices should rise by 3.5 per cent in 2027.<\/p>\n
However, the CDC elected to implement a smaller increase after reviewing current economic conditions and gathering feedback from dairy farmers, processors, retailers and food-service representatives.<\/p>\n
According to the Commission, the lower adjustment reflects a desire to provide fair returns to producers while recognizing broader concerns about affordability and market conditions.<\/p>\n
The CDC also cited changing consumer preferences, including growing demand for higher-protein dairy products.<\/p>\n
Additional carrying charge increase announced<\/p>\n
Along with the farmgate price adjustment, the Commission will increase its carrying charges, which are used to partially offset storage program costs.<\/p>\n
Combined, the changes will increase the cost of milk purchased by processors by 2.8245 per cent.<\/p>\n
Those costs affect the production of fluid milk, cream, yogurt, cheese and butter sold through retail and food-service channels.<\/p>\n
Retail price impact uncertain<\/p>\n
The Commission stressed that changes to farmgate milk prices do not automatically translate into similar increases at the grocery store.<\/p>\n
While milk purchased from farmers is a key cost component for processors, consumer prices are also affected by labour, transportation, packaging, distribution and other supply-chain expenses.<\/p>\n
As a result, the final impact on retail dairy prices remains unclear.<\/p>\n
The Canadian Dairy Commission said maintaining a stable dairy sector and supporting producers facing ongoing inflationary pressures were key considerations in setting the 2027 adjustment.<\/p>\n
