Additionally, the team cleared a 40-man roster spot by outrighting outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. to triple-A.

But alongside those smaller procedural moves bigger questions are approaching, starting with a first wave of decisions coming Monday, the fifth day after the World Series. Qualifying offer decisions are due league-wide, all players must be reinstated from the 60-day injured list and free agency officially opens.

With that in mind, here’s a closer look at what that means for the Blue Jays:

Around the league, there are some interesting candidates to receive the $23.15-million qualifying offer, including Jazz Chisholm Jr. and David Bednar of the Yankees, Jake Bauers of the Brewers, Ian Happ of the Cubs and Adrian Morejon of the Padres. All QO decisions are due Monday at 5 p.m. ET.

Whether those players receive and reject the qualifying offer will impact whether it costs a draft pick to sign them, so the Blue Jays will, of course, monitor those decisions. But none of their own free agents are candidates to receive one this year.

Kevin Gausman might have been the closest thing to a QO candidate but he’s ineligible to receive one for two reasons: he’s already been given one and he was traded mid-season. That simplifies things for the Blue Jays on a day that will be busy for other reasons.

The Blue Jays have one option decision due, an $8-million team option for Myles Straw versus a $1.75 million buyout. Straw’s production dropped off in 2026, but he’s still an excellent defensive outfielder and an important part of the Blue Jays’ clubhouse. Even if the team declines the option Monday there could be pathways to a reunion here as Straw enjoys playing in Toronto and the Blue Jays will need right-handed bench options.

During the season, teams are permitted to place players on the 60-day injured list, which doesn’t count against 40-man roster limits and allows teams to carry more than 40 players at a time. Yet, starting Monday, that’s no longer possible.

For some teams, this can create a roster crunch and Martin’s removal from the roster connects to this deadline. But even once they reinstate the likes of Jose Berrios, Jake Bloss, Bowden Francis, Cody Ponce, Addison Barger, Jonathan Clase and Anthony Santander, the Blue Jays will have a total of just 39 players, so they don’t have to make cuts just yet.

Within a couple of weeks, they will likely need 40-man space to protect Rule 5 Draft-eligible players such as Nolan Perry and Gage Stanifer from being snapped up by other teams. Plus, each free-agent signing will require a 40-man spot. With that in mind, the likes of catcher Shawn Ross and right-hander Chase Lee may not make it through the off-season on the roster.

Whether the Blue Jays make those moves Monday or later remains to be determined. Yet at some point, cuts will be needed.

Behind the scenes, this is a crucial week for the Blue Jays to express initial interest in all areas of the free agent market: MLB free agency, minor-league free agency and posted NPB players.

Everyone has known for months that Tarik Skubal, Randy Arozarena and Seiya Suzuki will headline this year’s class of free agents. But those players have only been able to engage with all 30 teams since last week and Monday at 5 p.m. ET marks the end of MLB’s so-called quiet period and the moment they’re finally permitted to sign with new teams.

Beyond the MLB level, minor-league free agency opens Monday. It’s an easily overlooked avenue for player acquisition but has led to significant finds in recent years, including Nathan Lukes.

Lastly, the posting windows have officially opened for three prominent Japanese players, with third baseman/outfielder Teruaki Sato and right-handers Kaima Taira and Hiromi Itoh now on the clock to sign by Dec. 1. Technically, the players have 45 days, but the lockout essentially turns this into a 30-day window for deals, after which they’d likely return to NPB for another season.

The Blue Jays have been major players in Japan and Korea in recent years as their relationships in those markets have improved along with their understanding of the player pool. Sato, Taira and Itoh are all expected to be highly coveted players in an otherwise weak free-agent market.

And since all three are possible fits on paper for the Blue Jays, it stands to reason they’ll have exploratory conversations with all three and see if there’s traction toward something more.

After Monday, players have 10 days to decide whether to accept qualifying offers. Teams, meanwhile, must prepare for a couple rapidly approaching deadlines. On Nov. 17, they must protect Rule 5 eligible players by adding them to their 40-man rosters. And on Nov. 20, they must tender arbitration eligible players contracts for 2027.

TORONTO — The MLB off-season is quietly underway, and for a Toronto Blue Jays team that’s had extra…

[9
49,48,82
post-956284","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-sports
["GET
