{"id":956562,"date":"2026-11-03T09:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-11-03T09:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/956562\/"},"modified":"2026-11-03T09:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-11-03T09:14:13","slug":"ethiopia-violence-in-the-north-is-pushing-health-system-to-the-brink-who-chief-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/956562\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopia: Violence in the north is pushing health system to the brink, WHO chief warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cReports of attacks on civilians in Ethiopia\u2019s Amhara and Tigray regions are deeply disturbing,\u201d Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrTedros\/status\/2117174459878592876?a=fDXlJZOHTSbwa7dbsJo&amp;s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">a post<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n<p>He said children, including a newborn, were among fatalities at a displacement camp in Amhara.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a separate strike in the town of Rama in Tigray, several people were reportedly killed while trying to get food.<\/p>\n<p>Attacks \u2018tragically\u2019 frequent<\/p>\n<p>Fresh fighting between Ethiopian Government forces and rebel groups resumed in the two regions and another, Afar, in September nearly four years after a peace deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2026\/10\/1168570\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has warned<\/a> of the risk of escalation and wider destabilization.<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statements\/2026-10-31\/statement-attributable-the-spokesperson-for-the-secretary-general-escalating-drone-attacks-sudan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he said he was appalled<\/a> by recent attacks on civilians \u2013 including health facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary-General calls on the parties to spare the civilian population and critical infrastructure and agree without delay to a cessation of hostilities as a first step towards ending this devastating conflict, said the statement issued by his Spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe renews his urgent appeal to the parties to engage in good faith with mediation efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the deadly strikes marked the latest incidents, \u201cdrone attacks and civilian casualties have tragically become frequent across Ethiopia\u201d, Tedros said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe violence in northern Ethiopia is pushing an already fragile health system closer to collapse,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospitals face shortages of health workers, medicines, and equipment. Ambulance services are severely limited. Insecurity is obstructing the delivery of life-saving medical supplies to some areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The best medicine is peace\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHO<\/a> and partners \u201care working around the clock to deliver additional much needed medical supplies to all the affected regions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As fighting continues, he warned, more people are likely to lose access to essential healthcare.
